REUNITED

The town of Bright River held too many sad memories for Jessica Portman. She’d returned for one reason– to oversee the takeover of her ailing father’s mill by a rival company. She intended to finalize the deal and go back to Italy.

Then she met the owner of J.C. Enterprises, Jack Chabrol– the boy she’d left behind. Only Jack was no longer a boy; he was a man– a man bent on revenge. He had never forgiven Jessica for leaving him to marry someone else, nor had he forgotten the love they’d once shared. Jack was determined to possess Jessica, and she had only one defense against his anger: her love.

I have to say I really enjoyed this book. Plot was well thought out, interesting and book was full of emotions. Jack was the son of immigrant Canadians, whose parents were poor and worked in the Mill Plant. Jessie was the daughter of the richest man in town, owner of the Mill Plant. They both met in highschool and fell madly and passionately in love. One night, her father catches them and prohibits her to see Jack. Apparently, Jack was not good enough for her. When Jessie's father finds out she is pregnant, he threatens to send Jack to jail for rape. In exchange, Jessie agrees to leave town, marry a boy her father approved of.

Jack is devastated by Jessie's departure and what he thought her betrayal. Ten years later, Jack comes back to town, he has become a very rich and wealthy man. He has planned revenge against Jessie and her dad by taking over the Mill plant. Jack was so full of anger and hurt he couldn't see or feel anything else. Jessie was coming home, now that her father was extremely ill. She needed to settle all the debts her father had, see to his medical needs and take care of her younger sister who as getting ready to go to college. When Jack saw Jessie after so long, he knew that he had to have her and that he had to make her pay for breaking his heart. He essentially blackmails her into marrying him. In exchange, he would save her father's reputation, pay for this medical bills and pay for her younger sister's college tuition.

She accepts because she finds herself with no better alternative, but also because she still loved him after so many years. She was hoping that after being married, his feelings towards her would change and that she could make him happy. Jack treated her poorly, did not communicate with her, kept her at arms length in every aspect of his life, except for in the bed. When they were together, no words were needed. Their bodies expressed what their words were not saying to each other. Was this enough for Jessie? How long can she keep that up?

Story kept me interested. I couldn't put the book down and wanted to see what would happen next or if they were both going to open themselves up. Book was well written. I could feel both characters' emotions even though they were so different. I could feel his anger, but at the same time his love and desire for her. She loved him and wanted to make this work with him. The ending was very touching and sweet. I loved reading it and will probably read more from this author.

I really enjoyed this tale of revenge marriage, even though the hero was a little rough around the edges and the heroine just a tad passive for me. The couple meet when they are kids and are separated by the girl's judgmental father, who doesn't think the immigrant Canuck football player is good enough for his precious little girl. As so often happens in fiction but rarely in real life, the poor but honest hero finds success. He engineers a takeover of the formerly wealthy father's company, forcing his erstwhile lover to marry him to bail her family out of hot water. Jack's plan is to make Jessica pay for her abandonment of him ten years earlier. Of course he finds out as the story unfolds that his lost love was as much a victim as he was, and all ends happily. The enduring attraction between the leads is very believeable and you forgive the headstrong, pitiless Jack for his reckless behavior because he is still so in love with his lost lady. When he is driven to distraction trying to convince himself that he doesn't need her and is just making her pay for her nefarious past, you want to kiss him and smack him at the same time. I give it five stars for a great story and a sexy main man; my only complaint is that I wish Jessica had shown a little more sass.

2.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Heroine is too weak 8 de abril de 2012

Jack Chabrol is a boy from the wrong side of the tracks, a French Canadian teen new to Bright River Massachusetts. He comes from a large family with a drunken father employed by the mill. This hero in the beginning of this novel is quite likable. He is misunderstood and lonely but gifted with athleticism.

Jessica Portman's father owns the Mill and about everything else around Bright River. He is raising two daughters alone and he is very protective of Jessica. He has planned her entire life. Jessica is captivated by Jack though and they have a sweet passionate teen romance. But when Jessica's father discovers the young couple and Jessica's secret everything falls apart for these two love struck teens.

Ultimately this novel is about lost love and the opportunity for two lovers to find each other again. Jessica broke Jack's heart and worse kept secrets from him for years. So when Jack returns to Bright River with plenty of cash, he wants revenge against Jessica and her father. At times this novel works very well; Jack's hurt is palpable and raw. The reader understands his pain. Jessica was harder to fathom. Her loyalty to her father was misplaced and she had the power to change her destiny.

These leads do not seem to like each other much when they meet in the future. It takes some time for them to be civil and Jack's deep resentment and hurt caused him to lash out more than he needed to with the heroine. I found both these leads to be too secretive with facts and feelings and the heroine especially comes across as too weak to make her own choices.
