Descripción del producto

What has mystery, romance, humor, adventure and over 999,000 characters? The answer is Breaking Tecumseh's Curse, the memoir written by Jan Marie and Bob Ritter. Although painstakingly researched and true, the book is written in the entertaining style of a narrative novel. Nonfiction at its best!

It relates the couple's early years together when Bob was an agent with the United States Secret Service in Washington, D.C. “It’s the first Secret Service book told from a spouse’s perspective,” says author Jan Marie. Rich in emotion, Breaking Tecumseh’s Curse is the heartfelt love story of a young couple’s journey through some extraordinary times.

From 1840 to 1960, every United States president elected or reelected in a year ending in zero died in office. Of those seven presidents, four were assassinated. Breaking Tecumseh’s Curse unfolds the real-life adventures of the U.S. Secret Service agent who tried to change tomorrow. Through enhanced protective procedures, Secret Service Agent Bob Ritter hoped to prevent a similar fate for the president elected in 1980, Ronald Reagan. Some never before published information regarding the Reagan assassination attempt is revealed.

There’s also an exciting, historical look at assassination and the Secret Service including a provocative profile of accused JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. Breaking Tecumseh’s Curse spotlights a dangerous period for the Secret Service—from 1972-1982. During that time, five assassination attempts took place against persons protected by the USSS, more than any other era. The book presents the historic events of the time and a rare insider's look at the Secret Service.

The little-known field of protective intelligence is featured. With hope for preventing future tragedies, some successful strategies for predicting dangerousness in individuals are also explored. Bob's mantra of "desperate people are dangerous people" and assessment techniques developed by him jump off the page at a time when violence and mass murders are all too often in the news. We can change our tomorrows.

Join Bob Ritter and his fellow agents for fun, adventure, and some sorrow too as they try to break Tecumseh’s Curse.

Biografía del autor

Jan and Bob Ritter live on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay in Southern Maryland. Both are graduates of the University of Maryland and longtime residents of the Washington Metropolitan Area. Jan is retired from the teaching profession where she specialized in early childhood education and Reading Recovery. When not walking the boardwalk for exercise, she enjoys shopping, antiquing, reading, and working crossword puzzles. Bob is a retired federal criminal investigator (GS-1811) with a wealth of law enforcement and protective experience. A born collector, Bob loves history and the music of the 1940s-60s. He takes pleasure in watching the wildlife and ships that pass by the couple's bay-front condominium. Bob is a member of the Association of Former Agents U.S. Secret Service (AFAUSSS), the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA), and the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP). Jan and Bob relish spending time with family and friends, especially the couple's five granddaughters. With over 40 years of marriage, Jan and Bob deeply love one another and cherish each day together. Breaking Tecumseh's Curse is the story of their early years together.

As the daughter of a Secret Service agent, I remember the exact day that I realized what my Father's job really was - to die for someone else! I bought this book hoping to learn more about the Secret Service and specifically the history of Tecumseh's Curse. I was not disappointed. Exceptionally researched history was intertwined with the side of the story that many American citizens don't think about - the human side of these Secret Service Agents who pledge to protect the President at all costs. A great read, well written and easy to follow for a history afficionado as well as a lay person. I recommend this book for anyone interested in Secret Service History, the History of Tecumseh's Curse, as well as personal accounts of the times.

I FOUND THIS TO BE EXTREMELY WELL WRITTEN AND VERY INFORMATIVE. I HAVE HAD MORE THAN ONE CONTACT WITH AGENTS, BOTH PROFESSIONALY AND PERSONALLY. I NEVER KNEW MUCH ABOUT THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES, OTHER THAN THE POTUS PROTECTION. I NOW KNOW THROUGH THIS BOOK THERE ARE SO MANY FACETS OF THE SECRET SERVICE THAT ARE VERY MUCH BEHIND WHAT THE PUBLIC SEE'S. THE INFORMATION WAS VERY WELL PRESENTED BY THE AUTHOR IN A MANNER THAT DISPLAYED HER EMOTIONS AND THE EFFECT THE POSITION HAD ON THE FAMILY'S QUALITY OF LIFE.IT ALSO SHOWED THE CHARACTER AND INTEGRITY OF THE SPECIAL AGENT'S.
I WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE BOOK TO THE POINT I FOUND IT DIFFICULT TO PUT DOWN. I ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW WHERE THE NEXT CHAPTER TOOK ME. IN CONCLUSION, EXCELLENT READING.

Interweaving romance, family life, mystery, legend and history, Breaking Tecumseh's Curse engages on many levels. Beginning as a college romance, Jan and Bob's relationship evolves into marriage and a family and provides a central theme to the events that follow.

From Jan's unique perspective, her story relates the challenges of keeping her marriage and family life strong with the pressures of Bob's responsibilities as a Park Police officer, criminal investigator and Secret Service agent through the tumultuous period of 1972-1982.

As a meticulously researched historical account, the book provides interesting details and insights about the legend of Tecumseh's Curse. Bob's dedication to the Secret Service's mission of protective services and the anticipated continuation of the curse through Ronald Reagan's presidency add another layer to the story. As a cautionary tale, Bob's innovative proposals for protecting the president are not implemented and we are left with unanswered questions of what precautions might have prevented the attempt on President Reagan's life.

In contrast to recent disturbing events involving the Secret Service, this book stands as a tribute to the many dedicated agents and their families.

I usually read one fiction and one non-fiction book at the same time, and will grab the latter when I need help getting to sleep. That was a mistake with this book, as it was interesting and compelling enough to keep me up late for the two days it took to read--a page turner of the type I usually associate with fiction. The mixture of contemporary history from a unique insider view with the personal life of the author and her husband was well balanced and keeps the chapters moving. The account of a secret service agent as a real human being and family man contrasts with the common movie portrayals of stoic, even robotic supporting characters. This was an excellent, well-written book that I would strongly recommend. (non) Disclosure: my last name is the same as the authors, but I am not related and have never met them.

At first blush, I thought it was going to take me a while to get through the book. I soon found out that I couldn't put it down, it was a quick read. The history lesson that provided a backdrop to Ritter's days as a Park Police Officer & Special Agent of The USSS was very interesting. I found the details of Ritter's day-to-day duties to be very eye opening. The ongoing history lesson that gave context to Ritter's jobs were particularly educational. I found myself saying one of the following three things to myself: "I was aware of that", "I never knew that" & "I thought I knew that bit of history but I had wrong". I would recommend the book to anyone who is a student of history during that period of time or is interested in the machinations of both the US Park Police & USSS during some very stressful times.
