In the summer of 1879, the sheriff of Laclede County, Missouri arrested 20 year old Billy Martin for murder. He was a prisoner for six months awaiting trial for bushwhacking his uncle, who was shot in the back while plowing a corn field. While awaiting trial, he fell in love with the sheriff's niece, 15 year old Maggie, who was entrusted with feeding the prisoners. Billy's murder trial and the events which followed created a sensation that interested all of southwest Missouri of 1880. The newspaper readers of that era believed that Maggie had fallen in love with a cold blooded murderer, a gunfighter and desperado who would do anything to obtain freedom.
