Descripción del producto

Descripción del producto

Chris Alexander originally travelled to Khiva, a remote walled city in Uzbekistan on the route of the ancient Silk Road, to write a guidebook. But he stayed, mesmerized by a world of silk and forgotten 15th-century carpet designs – discovering indigo blue, madder red, pomegranate gold and the subtle shades of life in a desert oasis.   Alexander’s entrancing travelogue sees him stripped naked at a former Soviet youth camp, crawling through silkworm droppings, tackling a carpet-thieving mayor, distinguishing natural dyes from sacks of opium in Northern Afghanistan, bluffing his way through My Heart Will Go On for Uzbek TV and seeking sanctuary as an anti-Western riot consumed the Kabul carpet bazaar.   The result is an unforgettable true story of a journey to the heart of the unknown.

Es una historia interesantes pero muy cursi y excesivamente sensiblera de un tipo que se va a Uzbekistan e intenta y pone en marcha un taller de alfombras. un coñazo

I have had the absolute pleasure of visiting Khiva, Uzbekistan. I witnessed the beauty of its Islamic architecture, intricate designs, stunning colors, and beautiful people. But nothing on my visit took me into the depth of Khiva's story like the words from Alexander's book. I am sure there are books that more thoroughly cover themes found in this book: Khiva's history, Central Asian Islamic culture, Soviet society, humanitarian work, carpet weaving and natural dyes. But I love how Alexander weaves these themes together in a contemporary real-life story that both engages and educates the reader. Alexander peels back several layers of superficial misunderstandings to expose the complex intersection of diverse forces at work in Khiva, and one man's hope to establish a cottage industry and transform a few lives in the process. Definitely worth reading.

In A Carpet Ride to Khiva, Alexander offers us stories of Uzbek people whose world may be nothing like our own and yet they possess all of the human passions we are familiar with; love for family, a desire for fun, and a need to attach meaning to life. This non-fiction work is a brilliant example of storytelling at its finest. Alexander's book is inspiring, challenging and entertaining. It was an honor to be privy to such an honest narrative.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Real-life adventure 30 de diciembre de 2010
Por James J Cornett - Publicado en Amazon.com
Formato:Tapa blanda
Many people dream of living in another country and working for something bigger than themselves. Yet few let go of the securities and comforts that often surround and sometimes ensnare daily life. Are the sacrifices worth it? Does the adventure outshine the difficulties? Can one really make a difference in the world? Chris Alexander dared to challenge those questions and more as he stepped into the unknown world of Central Asia, where the only certainty was that there would be something new around every corner. Aslan, as Alexander was often called, decides in his writing to couple the lore of adventure with the sometimes harsh, sometimes heart-warming, sometimes comical nature of real life. If you can't pack up and embark on an adventure to the former Soviet Union, you can live it vicariously through "A Carpet Ride to Khiva".
