Descripción del producto

After quitting her job and selling all her possessions, including her house, the lone female traveller became unemployed and homeless. With her only remaining possessions, her backpack and some books, she set off on a life-changing travel adventure through the countries of Thailand and India. Thailand offered peace, comfort, an easy lifestyle – and a lot of fun. India offered mayhem, frustration, challenges – and also a lot of fun. However, the most important thing that these countries offered was a happier and freer life. So follow her on a journey from a jail like existence of a government desk job and the relentless demands of modern day living to a new life of fun and freedom.

Biografía del autor

Michelle J Coote was born in Sydney, Australia. She followed all of society's instructions on how to create a successful life. Over many years of hard work, she had secured a university degree, a high-paying job, a big house and lots of stuff. But after travelling in other countries, she discovered she wanted something else. So she left the golden shores of Australia, travelled around more exotic countries for a few years, and then found a new home in a foreign land. The author now resides by the sea in Thailand, where the ocean breeze and fresh air help her to write about her tavelling adventures. 'I Come Alone' is the first account of one of those adventures.

I have never come across such claptrap, racist, ignorant generalisations in a travelogue before. No one expects the author to give an objective account of her travels and an astute reader wants to have an insight of a particular place, country, nation through the eyes of a very particular person's mindset. And unfortunately the author is mindless, making
huge conceptual and logical jumps - eg. Indian taxi driver is lost - her conclusion: the Indian mind has no place for logic (verbatim) or her ideas about antidepressants. She spends two months in Thailand and hangs out with like-minded Aussie drunks . She reduces everything through her myopic frankly uneducated view of the world. She goes to two amazing countries, with complex, rich cultures and has no interest in anything other than the price of her next glass of wine or beer. Her Trip to the Elephanta caves in India is dismissed as "it held nothing of interest to me".

Her book held no interest for me part from providing insight into how all the travel in the world can make no impact on a person so without an ability to transcend their own limitations.

I bought this as an ebook based on a recommendation from a friend. What a bargain!
My husband and I both found the book delightful, a very personal travelogue with insights into Australia, Thailand, and India.
The author's personal story is compelling, especially her estrangement from work and life in Australia and her move to freedom in Thailand and India.
I also enjoy traveling and it was great fun to read the details of her discoveries and disappointments.
Also just finished reading the rather heated remarks from a reviewer a few months ago. Certainly shows that the book is thoughtful and real, and can provoke a passionate response.
I didn't find anything offensive, but like any travel writer, the author does comment on her experiences and observations. That's why I enjoy travel writing, to see the world through another's eyes.
Looking forward to the next book from the author, on her continuing experiences in Thailand.
Get to work, Michelle!

The author of I Come Alone is a talented and perceptive story teller who draws the reader into her interesting and unique account of traveling in Thailand and India. A very enjoyable and well written book filled with compassion and passion for the people and cultures of the countries she visits. (P. Ratnieks)

I really enjoyed reading Michelle Coote's travel story - A courageous woman leaves her secure and comfortable (but boring!) life in Australia and dives into a strange world where everything is so different. Dangers multiply if you are a woman travelling alone but Michelle did it with all her naivety and innocence - and this attitude of hers seems to have brought out the 'gentleman' in even the roughest of rogues! Her compassionate understanding of, what must be to her, a bewildering array of people and events is indeed commendable. I liked your book Michelle and look forward to your next one - this time ? about your experiences in Thailand...

My intention was to read the first chapter of I Come Alone. What a provocative title. I would read a chapter a day until I completed this nonfiction work. How wrong I was. Instead of one chapter, I took delight in reading much of the book in one sitting. The story drew me in and I became mesmerized.

The book is "prose friendly." To my ongoing surprise, there is a plot, meaning I wanted to know what is happening during the reading and what's coming next, such is the power of the author's storytelling ability.

In the first part of the book we learn that a university education with a major in economics was a bad choice for the author's university days and her work in government service in Australia was unfulfilling and uncreative. The job made her miserable. Having a charming, sprawling home did not make her happy. Acquiring possessions during her 14 years stint in government service added to her melancholy. Happiness, she learned, was not in acquiring goods, a house or any other external trappings.

Seeing Thailand and India through the eyes of a woman excited me. I enjoyed traveling with the author. Her insights told me things I did not know about Thailand and India. Her revelations about Indian culture sometimes shocked me.

The author has obviously revealed her writing talent in I Come Alone. I highly recommend it.
