I bought a "new" copy of this via an independent shop (via Marketplace, iirc) and the actual book itself looks kind of terrible. (I should say that I do love---prefer---"omnibus" editions with multiple books or collected works in one nice volume, especially if it's a hardcover; it seems like this might be done more often in Europe and parts of Asia than in the United States, with houses like Library of America and Everyman being some nice and affordable exceptions for mainstream/classic stuff.) The font and printing was HIDEOUS in the copy I received of this edition of the trilogy. It looks so bad that it almost seems to be a bootleg or pirate edition, yet I think it's still in-print and available directly from Amazon UK, not to mention via U.S. Marketplace. Could my own copy have been a cut-out, a misprint? I'll never know, because it was cheap enough and legible enough to keep and read, but caveat emptor. I also wish it had contained THE BLACK DAHLIA, to round out the L.A. Quartet.
Enough has been written elsewhere about the content of the novels, but I think they are highly recommended to anyone who's the least bit interested in great American writing, "genre" or otherwise; and it's _required_ reading for anyone interested in contemporary crime fiction: top of the heap!
