Hal Leonard Corporation has released well over 100 of these book/CD collections for guitar over the years, and some are much better than others. Unfortunately, for the Early Rock Instrumentals collection they used inferior backing tracks (common on some of their more recent collections that include software on the CD for varying tempo), and have included several tracks of questionable value. "Telstar," for example, is not especially effective, because in the most famous version, an electronic organ carries the tune, as is the case in this version. Great for practicing rhythm guitar, but that's probably not why guitarists purchase a book/CD set such as this. Perhaps it was because of licensing issues, but there were plenty of other thoroughly guitar-based instrumentals that could have been included instead. Link Wray's "Rumble," for example, would have vastly improved this collection. Some of Hal Leonard's publications unquestionably are in the "must have" category, but this isn't one of them.
