Pattie shares the evolution of her outlook on life from being a good, American citizen to being a citizen for the good of Americans.... I don't remember how I found Pattie's blog, Foodshed Planet, in the beginning but I started reading her journey right at the start, when her blog did not include the word planet, even.

Pattie had never grown food, or collected water from her roof or even mowed her own lawn. Since the towers fell, Pattie has helped start the first community garden in her area, fought hard for bike tracks, turned her back yard into an edible garden and even planted vegetables around her letterbox, become a voice for feeding the poor home grown food, started foraging from public fruit trees and started the Sustainability Commission at her local council, just to mention a few things.

But Food for my Daughters is not about that! It is about making connections, finding hidden treasure in people's souls, it is about passion, kindness, laughter and fulfilment. It is about children and childhood and growing food for, and now with, her daughters. It is about what happened on the inside as much as what Pattie did on the outside. It takes you to a space that removes the fear and stress of wanting to do something, and replaces it with a spirit which whispers to you "This I can do".

Settle in for a great read with this book. It is organized by month (and thus seasons) and each chapter is chock-full of so much wisdom -- about gardening and about life. Mini vignettes comprise every chapter, making the book very entertaining and easy to pick up where you left off.

I laughed out loud (the author's observation of a tree in her neighborhood apparently doing a Dancer's Yoga pose instead of Tree pose); I learned dozens of useful things (such as that organic wine doesn't contain sulfites which give many people -- me included -- headaches); I questioned the rituals of my own busy family and how our habits could be more respectful of the planet; I tried new things (such as a delicious sauteed kale recipe).

I think the most impressive thing that author Pattie Baker has pulled off is in conveying her passion for sustainability without ever crossing over into sanctimonious talk. Her passion is contagious and makes you WANT to take up new habits.

A beautiful, beautiful book that I think every mother should read. I am sending a copy now to my cousin who is an accomplished gardener. I know she, too, will find treasures in this text.

This is much more than a "gardening book".
I am not much of a gardener nor am I someone with a hobby however Ms Baker has inspired me to move beyond my annual porch tomato plant and see what else I can create and share. I am taking on the challenge of growing lambs quarters next Spring, have already made rosemary rolls and am thinking about tackling soap next. When is the last time a book called you to action like that?

The life lessons she shares certainly made me think about things I was doing and not doing. So beautifully written, this book had me both laughing and crying. This is a must read and therefore all my friends are getting a copy. Bravo Ms Baker!!

This is a must read whether you are a gardener or not. The lessons of life and for our lives, that are shared in this ten year journey are applicable for all. There are so many moments where you stop mid-paragraph and take a few seconds to contemplate what you have just been introduced to. For me, it doesn't get any better than that. The seeds sown throughout this book will be harvested by many for years to come.

Mid-way through this book, I put it down, grabbed the envelope of amaranth that I'd recently purchased on a whim, and ran outside to plant it. The book did that to me. And it will do that to you too.

This book is the New York Times meets Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. It's packed with facts (1 in 7 Americans don't know where they'll get their next meal!), yet narrated with beauty. If you garden (or want to) or have moved towards a more sustainable lifestyle (or want to), then you'll likely enjoy this book. Pattie Baker muses on her garden, and it's the lavender and wild blackberries and Brussels sprouts that teach her about her place in her family and in this world. This book is a how-to book (13 recipes) and a fact book (woes and wows), but most of all, a memoir. The towers fell, Pattie Baker felt a profound sense of vulnerability, and as a result, planted a garden. Her garden tells her story.
