Descripción del producto

Descripción del producto

From Democracy to Dictatorship was a small pamphlet, printed and distributed by Dr Gene Sharp and is based on his study, over a period of forty years, on non-violent methods of demonstration. Now in its fourth edition, it was originally handed out by the Albert Einstein Peace Institution, and although never actively promoted, to date it has been translated into thirty-one languages. Now in its twenty-first year, it is being published for the first time in the English language. This astonishing book travelled as a photocopied pamphlet from Burma to Indonesia, Serbia and most recently Egypt, Tunisia and Syria, with dissent in China also reported. Surreptitiously handed out amongst youth uprisings the world over - how the 'how-to' guide came about and its role in the recent Arab uprisings is an extraordinary tale.Once read you'll find yourself urging others to read it and indeed want to gift it. It has been likened to Karl Marx's, Manifesto and Mao Tse Tung's, The Little Red Book in its historic importance and has played a pivotal role in the recent and ongoing uprisings of the Arab Spring.

I have been a fan of Gene Sharp ever since reading his seminal work, "The Politics of Nonviolent Action", back in '73. This work cements his reputation as one of the most important figures in the study of nonviolent political action. It is no accident that it was instrumental in influencing the February 2011 Egyptian Revolution. In simple, straightforward prose, Sharp lays out a primer on how to bring down autocrats. Indispensable to anyone who wants to change the world through nonviolence. Buy it!

I came across Gene Sharp after supporting a kick starter project - "How to Start a Revolution". It's mind boggling that in the current climate his works are not more widely studied and promoted. It's a nice title for the Kindle as it is sharp, short and well written and is a real page turner.

Investigation performed by Gene Sharp and all the team in the Albert Einstein Institution is very important for people pursuing democracy using peaceful techniques and avoiding any violent action against authoritarian and dictatorship governments. This book provides an introduction and provides guidance to many other resources needed to understand how to be organized and how to act.
