This assesment of Evo Morales is critical only in the sense that it argues that Morales isn't enough of an anti-capitalist. The ideological foundation of this book reminded me first and foremost of a sign I once saw at the UMSA, calling for a Trotskyite Marxist-Leninist Stalinist Revolution (literal translation) and requires that the reader be intimately familiar with especially Trotsky's writings.
This book certainly is rooted in serious research and is based on a deep understanding of Bolivian society--if marked by Trotsky--and as such may prove useful to those who manage to suffer through the endless political bias that seems to inform the entire work. This is not an assessment of Morales's politics so much as a judgement upon the man's shaky ideological underpinnings.
On the one hand, it is among the most comprehensive analyses of Morales. On the other, it is insufferably biased and stunningly outmoded. I cannot recommend it except to those who are either a) convinced Trotskyites or b) manage to wade through the swamp of ideological nonsense to glean from this the actual data contained herein. Both informative and illegible. What an unfortunate combination.
