Listening to all 13 albums released by Yes between 1969 and 1987 I am struck by how their career exhibited a striking arc initiated by their absolute peak of perfection between 1969 and 1972 and their first 5 albums. This was followed by a progressive decline in creativity that began in 1973 with their sixth album Tales of Topographic Oceans and the onset of a series of personnel changes that had a deep impact on the band. There was a secondary peak in the 1980s that featured a pop oriented sound which was phenomenally successful: their 1983 album 90125 was triple platinum in the U.S. Although I am a huge fan of early Yes, I can appreciate their later work, at least in parts.
High Vibration is a limited edition 16 SACD box set, featuring the 13 albums released by Yes between 1969 and 1987 and including the live album "Yessongs" as well as a bonus disc. The collection also includes an informative 200 page book that offers a history of the band, background information about its members, photos, a discussion of each recording and pertinent discographic data. The remastered DSD sound for both the SACD and the standard redbook CD layers is stunning in its clarity. I can hear levels of detail in the complex instrumental and vocal arrangements that have never been revealed before. Vocal textures have an almost satiny smoothness and refinement that must be heard to be appreciated. The band's multi-layered instrumental work has a Classical music intricacy and sophistication coupled with a Jazzy rhythmic excitement and funkiness that sounds timeless. Both qualities are accentuated by the brilliance of the DSD remastered recordings. Every album sounds great, with the newer recordings obviously having a more modern urgency and presence. The set contains the following:
1970 Time And A Word
1971 The Yes Album
1972 Close To The Edge
1973 Tales From Topographic Oceans 2CD
1973 Yessongs 2CD
1977 Going For The One
1987 Big Generator
2013 Bonus Disc of Rarities
This is a very pricey box set, designed for those who really love the band and feel the need to hear them in the finest high-resolution sound. High Vibration delivers on that promise, so if you come under the heading of a Yes aficionado who is well-heeled enough to afford this collection, I promise you that you will not be disappointed. This is the finest Yes collection that I've ever heard.
flash and pizzaz in your music and want to have the best Yessongs version available then check the High Vibration box (while its still available).
No you don't get all the bonus tracks released with the Rhino remasters but what the hell, in the end it's about the classic albums, and they sound glorious and fresh in this here Japanese Box.
