Whether you buy it at its list price or from one of the bargain sellers at Amazon, this 8-CD compilation of Martha Argerich playing chamber music is unmissable. Long retired from playing solo recitals and giving concerto concerts only in a limited handful of works, the pianist that many would consider pre-eminent has devoted herself to playing music with others, strongly emphasizing piano duos. She leads a summer festival of chamber music in Lugano every summer, from which EMI has released annual 3-disc sets that have been, arguably, the finest outpouring of high-quality chamber music since the great days of Marlboro under Rudolf Serkin.
Almost all of the music gathered here is from those Lugano summers, featuring prominent musicians, many of them young rising stars who became Argerich proteges, like the Capucon brothers. But she also attracts established stars like Itzhak Perlman, and their disc of the Kreutzer Sonata and the Franck A major Sonata constitutes CD 1 -- it was taped in Saratoga Springs and is the exception to Lugano. A close friend, cellist Mischa Maisky, is featured in several works, including a transcription of the same Franck sonata. The great Maxim Vengerov joins in the Shostakovich Piano Trio no. 2. All of these are stellar performances, and while it is all but compulsory for chamber music devotees to buy all the Lugano releases, Argerich's participation is spotty and often dominated by piano duos. Here we have her in every performance and piano duos are minimized (EMI offers some CD compilations of them separately).
Each reading is propelled by Argerich's galvanizing presence, which gives them a unique excitement. Her 70th birthday is giving us rich surveys of a fifty-year career on disc, a career that is nothing less than astonishing. Highly recommended.
