We saw "MLP: Equestria Girls" last month, and ALL I heard for two weeks was, "Mommy, do they sell Sunset Shimmer at the store? Mommy, can you order Sunset Shimmer online? Mommy, do I have enough money in my piggy bank to buy Sunset Shimmer yet?" So being the good mother I am to two of the most spoiled girls in Knoxville, I surprised them with this pony on our recent family vacation.
The pony is exactly as pictured, and the mask is a dinky little piece of card stock paper with shimmery designs printed on one side. A bit of metallic-colored elastic, knotted and poked through either side of the mask, "fixes" it onto the pony's head. My daughters have been sooooo careful with this mask, but a tragedy of epic proportions ensued when my 4-year old (the target market for this merchandise) managed to pull one of the knots through the tiny hole on one side of the mask, rendering it unusable. After some weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth, she brought it to me and I shoved the end through the hole and reknotted the elastic. This will happen again, of course, but the fact that the mask is still within a foot of the pony after a full week of daily play means that both of the girls really like the whole set. My youngest loves Sunset's cutie mark the best of all her ponies... and at this point we have about 100 of them spanning 3+ generations.
In conclusion, 5 stars for the pony and 4 stars for the mask.
Sunset Shimmer fits in with the other ponies of this scale perfectly and has a nice color scheme to boot. She looks how you'd expect a toy of her to look, and the Cutie Mark looks pretty cool too. There's really not much you can say about one of these toys since they all follow the same model, save for wings or a horn. Sunset comes with a pink brush and a masquerade mask. The mask looks great, though there's a problem with it- it's made out of paper! Chances are that most kids playing with these toys will be pretty careful with them. But a paper accessory is always trouble to keep in good condition. One wrong tug on the elastic band attached to it, and there it goes! That's really the only thing to look out for with this toy. The mask does look awesome when Sunset Shimmer is wearing it though. She almost looks like a luchador when viewed from the front, and that's always gonna get bonus points in my book.
Now that she's easier to find, Sunset Shimmer -shouldn't- be going for insane prices on here. You can find her in most store that carry MLP toys for a little less too.
