James's diary includes details of daily life in the Union Army as it tried to control the Western Front. The Illinois 13th Cavalry spent most of its time in Missouri and Arkansas. While serving, Kearney was promoted to 1st Lieutenant.
Compiled by J. Roger Kearney, a distant relative, the book contains a number of annotations and explanations and a family history chart which leads back to James Kearney's Irish ancestors and also shows a family connection to Barack Obama. Also included are nineteen newspaper clippings that James G. Kearney had pasted into his diary. The clippings mostly deal with the 1860 Presidential campaign.
