I was given a copy of this short story by the author to review. It is a somewhat interesting take on the classic noir or "hard-boiled" detective genre. It is definitely not your regular Spillane or Chandler story, as the whole (albeit short) tale follows the detective doing one thing. There are some excellent descriptions and characterizations here, but don't expect over-the-top Hammer action; This emphasizes another aspect of classic noir.

The only problems with this story were some spelling and grammar problems and the rather forced inclusion of the "post meridiem" expression. No detective, or person for that matter, that I've ever read or known would say something akin to "between seven post meridiem and two ante meridiem" in describing a time period as a part of a casual conversation or thought. Other than those, it was an interesting little tale.

Whenever I think of a detective story Mickey Spillane comes to mind. I guess in American culture there are still some hard-fast icons. And so visions of Mike Hammer danced in my head as I started reading this story. But I was surprised. This was a brief spotlight on a man's musings about his somewhat mundane life. It was set in the 1940's and it is very true to the flavor of the that time set. It was a short adventure in time travel. I enjoyed it as it took me away to another place and time as it gave me a brief window into mindset of that period.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas I thought this story was mysteriously wonderful ... 25 de julio de 2013

In many ways, this story was a joy to read and experience through the eyes and mood of Jack Kelly PI. The author's story-telling skills were amazing as was his breath of knowledge of New York in the mid 30's. I felt as if I was tagging along with Jack on his schedule run of the evenings events as played out by an investigator under the command of Hoover himself. Comical events and lighthearted encounters with Hoover and lugging potatoes up multiple flights of apartment stairs made me relate to Jack as a very likeable guy; but yes a guy who had certain issues in his life that became this story's mystery.

A very cleverly written short story that makes the mystery solver the actual mystery. The writing itself is very clean and beautifully composed in the first person narrative as most detective stories are it seems. This genre is not my favorite, however, this story opened up the possibilities that I would welcome reading more from this author in the future.

Reviewers note;
I was offered this book free in exchange for my honest review,

Pale Moonlight is a 28-page (on my Nook) novella starring not-so-special Agent Jack Kelly. He's undercover on a mission from J. Edgar himself, or Skirty Hoovie as Jack called him. He has a boring everyday life for his cover; however every night at 7:30pm he longs to see if the Blondie Express will ever stop at his station. He obsesses over this to no end and even knowing it's futile, he'll keep going back at the same time every night...

Pale Moonlight is an interesting take on rebellion, monotony, and obsession. Sent on an undercover mission after dissing the head of the FBI, Jack Kelly has found something worth living for - the Blondie Express which passes by him at 7:30pm every night. He'd love to take a ride on that train, but I think he realizes he loves the illusion more to ever shatter it by interacting. A neat noir piece, Pale Moonlight is as captivating as the Blondie Express.

Subtle sense of humour! Is my first reaction-from quivering to chuckling, Mr. Szabo has prodded the reader's hook deep into my imagination, and I am immediately very intrigued. Chuckling soon turns to chortling, just as I was savouring the keen prose, and the 1930's noir aura. I realize "noir" has become an overused, and sometimes inaccurately applied, word-but trust me, here it fits like a velvet glove caressing an iron fist. In addition to delivering that finely attuned humour, Author Szabo is a well-read individual, who manages to work in themes and allusions from many different genres: Supernatural, Fairy Tale, and even fact. His characters are delightful people and drawn with much talent, and his protagonist is a likable, easily comprehensible, individual who just needs-a little more good fortune!

"Pale Moonlight" is a precious, quickly read tale, a short story in the "7 Post Meridiem" universe of Istvan Szabo. I consider it a must-read and can't wait to find more from this intriguing author.
