Helpful hint to Amazon and/or the author. Many folks have no problem paying $0.99 for a book, but if you want people to read it through, it would be a great idea to create something compelling earlier than not. I "looked inside" and read the available pages, wasn't impressed, but figured I go for it and hope things would get better. Sadly, they did not.

Bargill did a serious disservice to Eliot with this title.

The main characters in Pills and Cigarettes are quite a strange mixture: Brandon who tries for the thirteenth time to kill himself, but fails. So he goes and buys a packet of Benson and Hedges. Worse than having not died was having to deal with people.
He leaves home and after traveling over two thousand miles he settles in a new place, Sacramento. Here he meets Danny Crane in a gay bar and they become friends and lovers. Danny's dream is to become a world famous painter. Richard who considers that the aliens turned his blood to powder and sees only conspiracies all around- the Nazis, the FBI the government, the aliens they were all after him. He drinks birds' blood to turn his blood into liquid but this is not enough and starts killing; Danny one of the victims. And Jack and Squiggles.
This short story is, in my opinion, a quest into manhood and into accepting the true self. There is flow in the seemingly disjointed ideas and episodes. I would say Brandon's dilemma is his state in between adolescence and adulthood. He continually attempts to find his way in a world in which he feels he doesn’t belong. While Brandon views himself to be as mature as adults, he is quick to become emotional. He feels sorry for a kitten that he brings home to feed. Squiggle's death urges Brandon it's high time to change his life.

Steve Bargdill’s “Pills and Cigarettes” is a highly engaging novella, with a strong main character that will grab you by the collar and not let go. Although I was uncertain for the first few pages where the story was going, the main character, Brandon, was so intriguing that I had to know what would happen.

Bargdill’s short tale reveals the life and misfortunes of Brandon. Nothing seems to go right for the poor kid, from his upbringing to his first love. The story delves into the darkness that surrounds him, permeating not just his life, but his whole being.

Brandon is not a simple character, and his life is anything but idealized. It’s in meeting and engaging with him that the reader is forced to keep turning pages, hoping that something better will happen for the guy.

If there is a criticism, beyond the fact that this is a novella and I wanted more story, it’s that Brandon’s friends introduced in the middle of the story, feel fleshed out, but are never fully developed for the reader. But it’s a minor tickle in what is otherwise a beautiful and haunting story.

In “Pills and Cigarettes”, Bargdill is able to convey a darkly romantic story around a very real character, which is a real treat in the novella. The scenes and dialogue the surround Brandon make this a hauntingly enjoyable novella that will stay with you days and weeks after.
