This book is an intriguing story about the everlasting importance of the lives of those fallen heroes who have served our nation. In each of nation's comflicts the burden of the fight has fallen on the shoulders of young, dedicated, hardworking Americans. Their lives ending far too soon, so many would never know the fruits of the contributions they made for all of us....and how significantly their sacrifice impacted our lives. By reading this artfully developed story, your mind can begin to imagine what each of those individuals's lives might have developed. More so, you can imagine the difference they might make if they were allowed to return to full and productive lives.
If you are one who may have lost a relative or a friend...or know the anguish of someone who has lost a hero, then you will find some comfort in imagining the depth of the lives of those who, in this book, who provide an example of the commitment, strength and honor of steadfast friends and warriors.
I was so impressed by this story that I obtained 30 copies of the book to be distributed to the Middle East Conflict Memorial during the their annual day of honor in the month of June.

The theme of the book is the stilling of restless hearts---restless from regret---of men killed in war. It is a given that the surviving families of such men mourn their loss and often feel intense regret at words or actions left unexpressed or undone, but this story reminds us that the spirits of those who die may also bear the burden of loss and regret. So, if the dead had an opportunity to return to life, what would they do? That's the gist of this story. The author's premise is a good one, and he handles it well enough. His writing holds interest and is fairly well put together to maintain the larger story, but his transitions are often so abrupt that I found myself going back to re-read a passage I'd just read, trying to see if I'd missed something.

The author does carry out his premise with a degree of plausibility for this implausible story, so his writing is, I suppose, good enough to carry that out, but the jerkiness of his transitions kept me from enjoying this book as much as I wanted to. Overall, I found the premise fascinating, but the telling of it was a bit lacking in finesse.
This book could have benefitted from a better editing job. A good editor would have seen the problem with the transitions, and would have demanded rewrites until the author produced a polished narrative.

This was a book that I really wanted to like, and buy copies to give to friends. As it stands now, I'll thank the author for coming up with the premise and for attempting to articulate it, but won't be able to give copies to friends as a "must read". A good story that could have been better written.

There has been an emotional silence in my life for 47 long years. A longing to know an uncle that did not return from Vietnam. A desire to know what he looked like, sounded like, was interested in and most importantly a yearning to know if he would love me? Restless Hearts has begun to heal the wounds that are so deeply carved in my heart. My uncle is a featured character in Restless Hearts. It is through the pages of this amazing book that I have become closer to him in his spiritual world and have begun to heal. This book led me to write a tribute to my uncle on the Vietnam Virtual Wall. After writing the dedication, I was contacted by the soldier who was with my uncle at the time of his demise. The soldier promised me he was not alone, did not suffer and he died well. What more could a niece ask for? A beautiful book with exquisite meaning and words showed me the uncle that I never knew and a real-life soldier eased the pain of the unknown. To the soldier-I thank you from the bottom of my heart, to my Uncle Ricky-I know you walk beside me every day, and to Dennis Baker-you are my angel on earth and thank you for bringing Richard Alan Wood home.

As a US Marine Corps wife for 20 years, I understand a lot of the feelings, emotions and places that are present in this novel.Commander Baker has written a truly complex novel about the "What ifs" if military personnel lost in combat could return from death to carry out a mission today. It is a clever story; a concept I have never encountered before, thus imminently interesting and readable. The book includes pictures of 7 of these restless hearts, real people whom the story is based on. It also includes a picture of a grave, the inscription reading "BUCK." The story opens with this unknown man. Commander Baker knows nothing of him except he was a military man, but he became the starting point for this wonderfully creative, heartwarming story. Let loose your imagination and read it. You'll be glad you did.
