'An artistic voyage in crime - thrilling and original'

Julia Blake is a conservator, working with classic art. Her expertise includes imaging beneath the surface of paintings to discover what lies beneath. She is sure that a number of those valuable paintings described as 'missing, believed lost or destroyed' have in fact been overpainted with another work as a means of hiding them. She has tracked down a collection of pictures in Florence that looks promising and has gone there to try to discover a hidden masterpiece and make her reputation.

Take No More begins when James Blake, Julia's husband, returns to their home in London to find that she has been shot and killed. What had brought her back to London unannounced? Why has someone committed this shocking crime?

Blake determines to find her killers. He has little to go on - just her last message to him sent from her mobile phone: 'help me' with an attachment showing Michelangelo's painting ‘Leda and the Swan’.

As the prime suspect of the crime, James flees England and sets out on a trail of deception and danger across the sweeping landscapes of Venice and Florence into a dark underworld of crime, conspiracy and corruption, a trail that will lead him to the killer - and the shocking truth behind the mystery.

Q&A with Seb Kirby

Q: Why did you want to write about an ordinary person suddenly placed in a situation where they have to face up to murder and organized crime?

Most of the time I get more from ordinary, flawed, people in situations that take them out of their normal lives. Then things get interesting as you see how they struggle with what seems for them to be impossible odds. I want to resolve things in the end on their side - my way, if you like, of righting some of the wrongs. So, what would you do if the mob targeted you and your family for murder and you had only the faintest clues as to why they were after you?

Q: Why does art crime feature as a main theme of the series?

After drugs and guns, art theft is the third largest international crime. One estimate puts it at $6 billion each year. Organized crime is behind many of the most notorious art thefts. Stolen works of art are used as a form of currency between mob members. I have a long term interest in art. Before I took up full time writing, much of my work included methods used to restore paintings and sculpture. It seemed natural to draw on this in creating the world that James Blake is drawn into. Uncovering what lies beneath a work of art and its history is also a good vehicle for developing the mystery and suspense that I’ve worked hard to capture in the series.

Q: Tell us more about the locations used in the series?

The crime conspiracy faced by James Blake is international in scope. I've been fortunate to travel widely in the past twenty years. Favourite places include: Venice, Florence, San Francisco, Boston, New York, London, Paris, The English Lake District, Lisbon and Crete. I've drawn widely on that experience in writing the James Blake thriller series. In TAKE NO MORE, the first in the series, events take place in London, Florence and Venice.

Biografía del autor

International bestseller Seb Kirby is the author of the James Blake Thriller series (TAKE NO MORE, REGRET NO MORE and FORGIVE NO MORE) and the Raymond Bridges sci fi thriller series (DOUBLE BIND). He says: 'I've been an avid reader from an early age - my grandfather ran a mobile lending library in Birmingham and when it closed my parents inherited many of the books. From the first moment I was hooked. Now, as a full-time writer myself, it's my goal to add to the magic of the wonderful words and stories I discovered back then.'

Having a brief conversation with the lovely Ignite about the book, I agreed with her on the fact that this book would make an amazing movie. So that's how I'll review it. This book has all the ingredients that you would expect in a fast-paced Thriller, with suspense, action, and a plot that skilfully brings together people who wouldn't have had anything to do with each other otherwise, through some really interesting twists. You want those things in a good movie. Here, you have them in a book.
As a reader, I got sucked in right from the beginning. It was a pleasure to read, and was for me one of those books that were hard to put down. A fantastic read, highly recommended !

I really enjoyed my recent read of `Take no More'.

I enjoyed the setting in Italy and I liked the way you linked your story around the murder mystery and the main topic, which was the hunt for missing paintings, and the main protagonist looking for his lost love.

`Take no More' is a very good read, well plotted and together with the twists and turns, and some horrible ruthless criminals me enthralled from beginning to end.

Well done and good luck with this.

Seb Kirby's Take No More is an excellent read. Combine memorable characters with murder, organized crime, Italy and art, throw in a few plot twists and you have a great story. Mr. Kirby's next novel is already on my 'to be read' list.

This is a wonderful novel from a new author and I hope it will be the first of many. The plot moves fast and often surprisingly. There is much to admire about Seb Kirby's knowledge of the art world and there's plotting and deceipt in the criminal underworld to contend with too. Seb is a master at writing emotion without overdoing it. He can make you feel the full jolt under the heart from bereavement, the lack of purpose felt by those who experience it, but he is never soppy about it. He can also express utter joy in a way many authors would love to be able to do.

I really enjoyed this book. It's a very satisfying read from an intelligent and talented author. More, please.

"Take no More" has a well crafted plot with a neat ironic twist at the end Kirby has an intimate knowledge of Florence, Venice, Milan and all things Italian. The story takes us to famous galleries and museums and winds its way through back streets and canals. The flow of language improves as the plot unfolds. There is good pacing and the characters are believable.
An excellent debut novel

Wow! This is action-packed from page one, and the reader is instantly thurst into murder, suspense, and intrigue.

James is just a normal guy who thinks he has a normal life. Until the murder of his wife. He's forced on a journey from the UK to Italy to find her killers, and finds himself in the midst of a powerful Italian family, the hunt for precious works of art, and danger at every turn.

The writing gives you the feel of actually being in Italy - you can taste and smell it. The plot is action-packed and a real page-turner.

I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys a great crime thriller! And fans of Harlan Coben and Simon Kernick will love it!

No, my math isn't fuzzy. Combine a great 4 star story full of exotic locations (that the author obviously knows intimately), fabulously drawn characters and an excellent and inventive plot, add an extra star for Seb Kirby's style and that gives you ten on the readability scale. The book veers from first to third person expertly but, for this reader, the first person tone was most enthralling. It was a few pages before I realized what I was reading: a sort of modern noir. I walked in the hero's shoes, was privy to his thoughts and intruded on his emotions as he was drawn into the mystery of his wife's death. Kirby's spare yet rich prose, his perfect word choices, made this a work that appeared to be effortlessly constructed. That seamlessness is the hallmark of a gifted writer. Definitely recommended.
