"You have to trust somebody, Cassidy. It might as well be me," he said. But she didn't know him. And something her mother taught her once always stayed with her: 'Better the devil you know than the devil you don't.'

When reputed mobster Tony DelMorrie feuds with his girlfriend and wins the fight by killing her, Cassidy Hoake is the only witness. She quickly becomes a target when DelMorrie skips bail - running is Cassidy’s only option. Now, she’s hiding from the devil, living in a small Ohio town, aware that only her anonymity protects her. She can’t afford complications like Clay Cestra. His police uniform fits like a second skin and he looks even better with his clothes off. But he is the law and she is a fugitive. A life with him means risking everything, confronting her demons and defeating the devil.

I love suspense. Throw a little romance in with it and I am hooked. Rena Koontz's new novel, The Devil She Knew, gives the reader a healthy dose of both.
Cassidy Hoake is on the run for her life. The witness to a violent crime, she steps forward and agrees to testify. But when the murderer escapes authorities and her car is blown up in her front driveway, Cassidy realizes she is on her own. She is scared and alone and thrown into a situation that no one should ever have to face. The last person she expects to help her is Clay Cestra, a sexy-as-all-get-out- cop.

The hero is introduced in the first chapter lovingly playing with his nephew. Right away, the reader is drawn to Clay. A tough cop who can kiss his nephew on the forehead and make him laugh? Enough said. When Clay meets Cassidy, he knows immediately that she is in some kind of trouble. His protective instincts kick in and he tries to help her but she rebuffs him at every opportunity. This makes Clay all the more determined to find out what makes her tick.

When the truth is revealed, Clay promises to help Cassidy. But Cassidy has been on her own so long, is she willing to believe in another person to keep her safe? And is Clay ready to let someone into his heart again after his disastrous marriage and divorce?

This book is a story about rebuilding trust and falling in love in the middle of mob bosses, crazy ex-wives and not one, but two shoot-outs. How can you not love that?

I love Rena's books on so many levels but the first really is character development. You WANT to know these people and you care about what happens to them. She writes in a clear way and even when there are occasional unexpected twists, you get em right away. Rena also has a lovely way of bringing sensuality into her story...you feel the heat between the characters...The other thing I really love is how she always manages to include iconic parts of Pittsburgh in her stories. Anyone who has ever ridden the Jack Rabbit at Kennywood knows EXACTLY how Cassidy felt in the vehicle! Quick and fun read and looking forward to book #3!

Give me a sexy cop with a heart of gold who loves kids and his family and a woman running for her life he can't resist helping and I am hooked. From page one.

So much of this book seems real. From the moment Cassidy Hoake changes her hair color, cuts her hair and goes on the run, you will feel panic and desperation along with her as she tries to evade the mob boss who saw her witness a murder.

She throws cheap braided rugs over the filth in her seedy apartment, gets a job at The Packing Place where she befriends the spunky and free-spirited Amber, and catches the eye of her seedy, slimy boss Wayne Keaseling (oh, the perfectly greasy name!). Enter sexy cop Clay Cestra whose cop instincts immediately kick in--he senses something's not right with this proud but skittish woman and can't resist helping her and getting her into a better place.

All the supporting characters in this book felt like real people to me. The romance is natural and you can't wait for these two good and decent people to realize they are right for one another.

The entire books rings with an authenticity that bond you instantly with the characters. Twists and turns keep you turning the pages right to the spellbinding conclusion.

Koontz knows how to use real details that ring true and how to paint a character starting from the heart up. I really came to care about these characters even as I began to dread the ultimate confrontation we know is coming.

An excellent read that will keep you up until you finish it! Can't wait for what's next from this talented author.

After reading the author's first novel, "Love's Secret Fire," which I really enjoyed, I couldn't wait to get my hands on her new novel. Unfortunately, even though I did like the story, I didn't think it was up to par with her first one. The plot was fine, and so was the male protagonist, Clay. My problem sits with the heroine, Cassidy. I thought she came across as very weak and child-like; there was nothing amazing about her; she lacked any kind of inner-strength and confidence; and she didn't know how to hide at all. I couldn't figure out why someone like Clay would find himself attracted to her. To the author I ask: why would someone who's running from the Mob not change her name? or use a nickname or such? Sure she needs a job but still???? Didn't make any sense to me. And right off the bat on her first day at her new job (the first chapter), she's skittish, unable to look at people in the eye, and becomes even more nervous around Clay who she knows is a cop. I mean she might as well have put a big red target on her and said "come and get me." If that's her idea of hiding, her character comes across as even weaker than I thought. If she had a job and used her real name to apply for it, unless she's getting paid under the table, wouldn't it be easier for the mob to find her? I'm sorry but all of this just didn't work for me. My other issue is the whole "I think I'm falling in love with you," the first time they're in bed - too much, too soon.

I'm a sucker for a good mystery romance novel and this one fit the bill! The story takes flight from the very beginning and leaves you unable to put it down, you just HAVE to find out what will happen next and how it will end (which is spectacular!)! Highly recommend picking this up and giving it a try, you won't be disappointed!
