Descripción del producto

Descripción del producto

The London of Jack the Ripper: Then and Now is a photographic journey through the London of Jack the Ripper as it was when he stalked the mean streets and alleyways of the Capital.
Robert Clack and Philip Hutchinson take the reader on a step-by-step tour of the crime scenes, giving a detailed history of the victims, the crimes and the police investigation.
Using many previously unpublished photographs and illustrations, the authors put the reader on the very streets that Jack walked, showing the crime scenes, the victims’ homes, the common lodging houses and the public houses. They show readers how to retrace the steps the victims took, pointing out the changes to that particular area and when those changes occurred.
Using contemporary documents and police files the authors trace the history of all 11 Whitechapel murders from 1888 to 1891 and discuss other contemporary attacks that may well have been by the same hand.
The book will not only be of interest to Ripperologists, but also to those who are interested in the history of London and the East End of London in particular.

This is quite an interesting book on London's Whitechapel which shows photos of certain sites important to the times of Jack The Ripper. This could have been made more interesting and informative if a general map of the area, together with other specific maps of the areas where the Ripper operated had been included. This would be specially helpful for those who are not yet familiar with the map of the East End and Whitechapel. The new layouts and photos of the present day streets together with the old would have made the book doubly valuable in identifying modern day Whitechapel streets with the old streets the Ripper stalked, considering the fact that some streets have disappeared altogether or been built over with structures, etc. All in all, the book is definitely worth having among one's library of Ripperology and I browse through it time and again. So often we get caught up in the crimes of Jack the Ripper, that we forget that the victims were real people who didn't deserve to die in the way that they did. Mr. Shelden's book reminds of that and brings them back to life,in a way, through their history. This is a must have book for those that care about them.

For a peek into the London of old, this book is excellent. Both photographs and descriptions of the old neighborhoods, compared to what's there now. Well organized.

Frying Pan public house in Brick Lane. The building can still be seen to this day. It is a very short distance up on the left and can easily be identified by the original large terracotta plaque bearing the name of the old pub at the top corner of the building. "e;
