Joseph Milton has a big problem: a masturbation addiction he can't tell anybody about, including his new girlfriend, Claudia, whom he's afraid to be intimate with because he can't get hard to have sex with her without jerking himself off. When he gets into a fight with his parents and decides to leave home, he realizes the only person he can turn to is Claudia, and Joseph has to face the pressure of performing in bed to justify staying with his girlfriend and her three children, or else (he thinks) he'll be kicked out onto the street. Things change when Joseph, while attending Johns Hopkins Medical School, gets sucked into a group that turns out to be a cult where trying to escape can cost you your life. When he reads in the newspaper about the federal government's decision to annex part of British Columbia, Canada to connect Alaska to Washington, Joseph realizes that the only way to escape his demons is to help his fellow cult members, all of whom have the same problem Joseph has, leave this old world behind and start a new colony in another continent. It's then that he must decide how much of his old life he's willing to leave behind.
