Descripción del producto

If you’re wondering what Chris Stewart did before he and Ana moved to El Valero, their Spanish farm, here’s one of the answers. He took to the sea, landing a job as skipper for the summer, sailing a Cornish Crabber around the Greek islands. It was his dream job – and there was just one tiny problem. He hadn’t ever sailed before and had not the foggiest how to start. In a series of madcap and hilarious adventures we follow Chris from a shaky start in Chichester harbour to his epic Odyssey to Spetses (a bucket would have been handy), and then on to the journey of a lifetime – battening down the hatches on a trip across the North Atlantic. It’s a journey crackling with Chris’s zest for life, irresistible humour, and unerring lack of foresight. Dry land never looked more welcoming. Chris Stewart shot to fame with Driving Over Lemons – Sort Of Books’ launch title in 1999. Funny, insightful and real, the book told the story of how he bought a Spanish peasant farm on the wrong side of the river, with its previous owner still resident. It became an international bestseller and together with its sequels – A Parrot in the Pepper Tree and The Almond Blossom Appreciation Society –has sold more than a million copies in the UK alone. Chris prepared for life on his Spanish farm with jobs of doubtful relevance. He was the original drummer in Genesis (he played on the first album), then joined a circus, learnt how to shear sheep, went to China to write the Rough Guide, gained a pilot’s license in Los Angeles, and completed a course in French cooking. Three Ways to Capsize a Boat fills in his lost years as a yacht skipper in the Greek islands and dodging icebergs in the Atlantic. It is that rare thing: a book about sailing equally fun for people without a trace of sea legs. Chris, his wife Ana and their daughter Chloë continue to live on their farm, with their numerous dogs, cats, chickens, sheep and misanthropic parrot.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Quick read about sailing misadventures 21 de septiembre de 2010

As a former Genesis drummer, one would think Chris Stewart found his niche early, hit his apex. His true calling, however, began unexpectedly as a sea captain. Tales of splashing salt water, life threateningly rough seas, disreputable ship captains, and very tolerant employers are relayed in this quick read packed with traditionally dry British comedic stylings.

Nearly destitute, Chris gets a break when a friend recommends him as a yacht captain - with no prior experience or clue about sailing - to a wealthy couple wishing to sail the Greek islands. Misadventures, both humorous and dangerous, ensue, as he gets his sea legs under him. Later adventures take him across the North Atlantic, a Leif Ericson trip redux, where he learns a hilarious life-lesson about the dangers of urinating while aboard a ship in rough waters.

A lightweight read about one man's adventure travel, Three Ways to Capsize a Boat is at times filled with flowingly detailed prose, but in others bogged down by nautical jargon. Unless you have experience with sailing, tell your personal coxswain to heave to and release the drogue if you think you'll understand everything within this short read. The positive to Stewart's engaging style, however, is that no elements of the story are lost in the vocabulary lesson. Vicarious thrills and dangers can be easily followed by sailing neophytes, despite sentences that may be lost on a reader. Whether it is the bolt rope, bowline, or brace doesn't matter as long as the reader knows "something" is untied.

This is a fun, quick read for a day at the beach, and I'd say it is mandatory reading for sunny days in the crow's nest.

Reading this book you just have to wonder how someone with that reckless a disregard for his own life made it through all he tried. And you are grateful he isn't your son/husband. So many times he cheated death by pure luck when he should have had more sense than to even be in the situation that was so dangerous.

Taking a job as a captain on a yacht before knowing anything at all about sailing and boats sort of points to a person who can try anything at least once. The fact that he learned to love sailing and actually did please his employers with his expertise points to a really capable person who likes to learn.

There are loads of laughs in this book, and some heart-stopping bits too. The writing has been compared to Bryson and that is a pretty fair comparison. This writer gives you a good read, and you feel you have been with him on a trip when you finish.

Need something light-hearted and quick? Chris manages to engage the reader with many micro-tales. All thoroughly enjoyable and laughable. If I were in his shoes I would surely be disabled, disfigured, and possibly dead. Thanks, Chris, for letting me live vicariously through your words.
