The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo »).

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross follow up last years Oscar and Golden globe winning score for the "The Social Network" with the score for David Fincher's version of Stieg Larsson's Novel "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo". Just like with "The Social Network" Fincher asked Reznor and Ross to provide the score for his latest Film and it proves a wise choice as Reznor and Ross have crafted nearly 3 hours of dark, melodic and haunting music. This score bares no resemblance to their previous work with Fincher. This is after all "The Feel Bad Movie of Christmas" and it's fair to say that Reznor and Ross have crafted a perfect feel for the Film that itself is bleak and cold(It features a lot of snow) in presentation.

Just listening to "She Reminds Me Of You" with it's cold atmospheric feel including the eerie sound of chimes as you can hear a the sound of a guitar droning in the distance, it sets up the rest of the score well. Trent Reznor's wife Mariqueen Maandig Reznor provides Vocal effects on a number of the tracks and is probably best used on "While Waiting" which is as much sinister sounding as it is soothing sounding. "The Seconds Drag" even includes a ticking clock used to good effect. A lot of the time the music creeps up on you such as in "People Lie All The Time" which seems to use a synthesizer sound left over from the eighties before adding a beautiful sounding piano. Even "Pinned and Mounted" starts off tame before changing to add some big sounding beats".

Anybody thinking that Reznor was not going to include some big industrial guitars played over heavy beats can rest assured as on tracks like "A Thousand Details", "Great Bird Of Prey" and "The Heretics" which features a screaming guitar midway through. Then there's "Oraculum" with it's 8 minute running time featuring big synthesized tribal beats. You can even add in the the 7 minute long "Infiltrator" which is an epic piece of music wich features all different types of noise, the kind of thing Reznor does best.

Of course anybody who saw the trailer from earlier this year knows that it includes a cover version of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" sung by Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeah's. They really do the song justice giving it a rocking synth feel full of blazing Guitars and beats. The choice of Karen O to sing the lead was David fincher's idea, she has confessed to not even knowing the song title but she delivers a powerful performance and is quite at home with this sound as anybody who heard the Yeah Yeah yeah's third album "It's Blitz" would testify. "Immigrant Song" starts off the album and another cover version closes it. How To Destroy Angels a band which features Mariqueen Maandig Reznor on vocals as well as Trent reznor and Atticus Ross, they cover Bryan Ferry's "Is Your Love Strong Enough" and take it from it's original sounding eighties style to a fresh up to date reworking.

"The Girl With The dragon tattoo" is a wonderfully crafted dark and atmospheric score, it's great for a dark room and a decent pair of headphones as the music sweeps over you. It's hard to really pick pieces of music out and at nearly 3 hours and 39 tracks long it is quite an undertaking to sit and listen to individual pieces but it is well worth it. It's definitely the best score I have heard this year, and after working with Reznor and Ross on his last 2 films it's hard to imagine Fincher getting anybody else to score his movies from here in, as Reznor and Ross have perfectly captured the feel of "The Girl With The Dragon tattoo."

I will lead with four facts. I love to discover outstanding soundtracks by composers with whom I'm unfamiliar. I have not yet seen the movie. I have not read Larsson's book on which the film is based, although I will. I'm 59 and love virtually all forms of thoughtful, well-performed music.

Here, then, are some reasons to purchase and revel in this wonderful recording.

Except for the lead cut, a powerful cover of Zeppelin's IMMIGRANT SONG, this is a quiet, ambient, three disc collection at a price so low I find it practically amazing. So,you can actually LISTEN TO these 35+ cuts, half of which do not occur in the film, but still reflect its dark-hues and omens. You can also WORK with it humming away. The score is, with a handful of exceptions, low-key, synthesized, imaginative, atmospheric genius.

The engineering is splendid, too, although there are no notes whatsoever. I can live with that.

The same team composed last year's Oscar®-winning score, but I never heard those compositions nor saw THE SOCIAL NETWORK.

BUT, if you love really competent minimalism. If you enjoy composers who develop scores based on stories or characters that are exhaustive and expansive, there's a lot to love here.

I will also pay the composers and producers two more compliments: (1)Because of the score, I'm reading all of Larsson's books and plan to see THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO next week. (2) I've listened to the album four times in its entirety, and will do it again. It doesn't wear out.

Superb creativity and production in a tasteful, high-value package. These days, with so much predictable, derivative junk on the market, it's pure pleasure to strike gold.

At this price, I'd seriously doubt you could go wrong.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have returned to film scoring after winning the Oscar for their work on David Fincher's "The Social Network". Now they have taken on David Fincher's new film, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo". Now, I've been into Reznor's instrumental style for quite a while now, so naturally I listened to the score before I saw the film itself. Upon listening to this 3-disc, 3-hour long musical odyssey, I absolutely had to get to the theater immediately to see this music in action in the film. I have to say, I was a bit disappointed in the amount of the score that's actually used in the film. I thought there were quite a few very memorable moments from this score that didn't seem to make their way into the movie. It seems like Fincher didn't want the audience to be too distracted by the music... seemingly. If I'm right, that might've been a smart move on his part, due to the amount of detail you must pay attention to in the film (which was very good, IMO).

If you have only seen the film, you have not heard the entire soundtrack. The way the music was used in the film was to attain as much minimalism as possible. While the minimalist approach IS rampant on this score, there really is a lot more than that on this release. If you have followed Reznor's career through the years, you know that one of his songwriting trademarks is his uncanny ability to create tracks that constantly build in intensity by using layers upon layers of music, creating a crescendo type of effect in many of his songs. That's what the film doesn't feature, musically. This score is a group of songs that, when allowed to build fully, really paint a portrait of their own. This release reminds me of the dedication Reznor put into Nine Inch Nails' releases of the past, such as "Ghosts I-IV" and the instrumental work on the "Still" EP. I honestly believe that this is a more solid listen than "The Social Network" score (which I found to be fantastic). Reznor and Ross go deep on this one. Fans of the ambient and hauntingly atmospheric instrumentals of "Ghosts I-IV" will undoubtedly enjoy this score. If you are looking for the industrial sound of the opening credits track "Immigrant Song" (a Led Zeppelin cover; featuring Karen O), you won't really find much of that at all beyond that track. You will find a new track from Reznor's current band, How To Destroy Angels (featuring his own wife as lead vocalist). The track is a cover version of Bryan Ferry's "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" (which you may remember from the "Legend" soundtrack, originally...), and is the closing track on the album. The only other vocals you hear on this score are sporadic female ethereal vocals spaced throughout several tracks. This soundtrack is a quiet listen, and I would say that only about 50% of the music actually appears in the film, if that.

In my opinion, this is a worthy and essential piece of music that belongs in your Trent Reznor collection. The music is engrossing, and even if the film didn't exist, this would still be worthy of your dollars, especially if you have been a Nine Inch Nails / Trent Reznor fan throughout the years. I highly recommend this underrated score. 5 stars.

I bought this after paying close attention to the sound during the movie. After the amazing job they did on The Social Network, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross did an even better one on this! Impressive ability to manipulate the listener/viewer's emotional state by the use of sound and music. Close your eyes, immerse yourself in it, and you will find yourself feeling cold, claustrophobic, tense, depending on where you are in the album. That does not mean it is not enjoyable as pure music in itself. Superbly crafted sonically, an audiophile album to be enjoyed in certain moods, hopefully with a fire burning and a drink :)
The only reason I knocked off a star is that it seems a rather long and almost laborious affair the way it is structured. It is meant to be heard in its entirety, and as such it may be a bit much. Maybe I don't have the musical and emotional stamina I once had, so your impression may vary.
That little gripe aside, a great album and definitely recommended.

'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' by David Fincher is a fantastic movie and a major part of that movie is the amazing soundtrack that comes along with the visuals. The key word here is 'WITH'. I have rarely listened to a soundtrack that is so necessary in the context of the movie.

Is this soundtrack bad? Certainly not but it is like listening to constant background music. In the right atmosphere (eg. WITH the film) it is perfect. Without, it is very hard to enjoy. Scores that have some kind of a "theme" are much easier to listen to independently and without the existence of tracks that sit on an island by themselves it is a droning listen at times.

I loved the score for 'The Social Network' and wanted to love this score on its own merits but it is very hard to do. I like it but I would rarely find myself listening to this.

Caveat emptor.
