THIS is the first book in an incredibly clever trilogy and, believe me, you will want to read the other two as quickly as possible after this one. I had never even heard of these books until I bought the first one purely on one person's recommendation, and that was it for me. I am now a staunch fan; so much so that I even watched a mini series on television, based on these three novels, which was entirely in Swedish and I could not understand a word.
From the first page the reader is caught up in this tale of a family tragedy into which first a journalist is invited, he then hires a genius computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander, whose trilogy this really is.
Stieg Larsson's research into every aspect of this novel is immense and amazing, and the real tragedy is that he died soon after delivering the manuscripts for these three novels to a Swedish publisher, and so did not live to see how many millions worldwide would read his works.
This first novel is a compelling story in its own right, as we are caught up first in the Vanger family, then the life of journalist Mikael Blomkvist, and finally that of Lisbeth Salander, the girl nobody wants to understand, until Blomkvist, and who trusts nobody. She uses her computer skills to pay off old scores, for others and for herself. She is one of the best protagonists in any crime/ mystery novel. You must root for her.
Save yourself some time and buy all three of this trilogy at once.
