When I opened the package, my first thought was, "This book is really too small to cover all of the information well. But hey, the cover is beautiful. If they put as much thought into the rest of the book as they did the cover, it should be very good."
This is a TERRIBLE book. I have many complaints.
I just got though the first chapter, named "Designing a Database Strategy". I don't come away from this chapter with a sense of having a strategy; it is just a bunch of disconnected, non-coherent info. There are `Pop Quiz's, which is good, except they are terrible too. First they look like they were just cut and pasted from the exam; they are phrased as multiple choice questions ("Which model ..."), while expecting a short answer. There are three "Pop Quiz" questions from different sections with the answer "Normalization". Two of them are just wrong ("Which is known as the collection of database objects, such as tables, ...?" Normalization. [I don't think so.]), and the other is questionable. In the "Key Terms" section, the word "principal" is spelled as "principle", making me wonder if the authors really know what they are talking about. Also, in the "Key Terms" section, none of the replication types were included, big miss. Really I don't know why they have the "Key Terms" in the chapter since the entire chapter is really only a large "Key Terms" section. The last section of the chapter is "Test Your Knowledge". There are only five questions in this section covering so many concepts, not nearly enough. The first question includes two answers that were not covered in the text leaving me to wonder what other important things they have left out of the text and yet might be on the test. The third question is VERY poorly worded, and I didn't know whether I was supposed to be analyzing the question for problems or whether I was supposed to redesign and normalize the data. In the answer section for this question, they just regurgitated the definitions of the normalization forms without any explanation of the multiple choice answers given and why they correct answers are correct.
As stated before, the cover is beautiful (unfortunately the best part of the book). The text inside looks like it was done with a cheap, old dot-matrix printer. It the book were any good, it would be an endearing feature, but since the content is so bad, this also detracts and made me a little angry.
Unfortunately, I can't return my book; I tend to start studying and underlining immediately when I get the book. I'm just glad I didn't buy any of the others in the series yet. What a waste of money and 2-day shipping.
