The material is arranged quite well and it has a lot of practice material. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the music proposed is not all like "Twinkle-twinkle" ( I am a grown up, after all). There is quite a variety.
Unfortunately, in order to learn how to play at the right tempo, etc, I rely on recordings. Now, I realized that i have to purchase the CDs if I want to play along.
The separate editions contain the cds but not the dvds; had I known that the DVDs did not contain the written material, i would have purchased the volumes separately.
UPDATE: 6/25/2011 - The author replied to the review (how awesome is that!) and pointed out that the material i was looking for is actually on the second DVD (which I had not watched because I have not reached those lessons, yet.) I checked out the material and I am very happy! I can play along as I study each piece. I changed, for this reason, my rating to 5 stars. Excellent!
The full picture of the finger keys is really all its missing; however, it's very well presented separately cord by cord so you'll learn fast and it's a magical experience for everyone. The full picture of the keys with everything labelled you can get from your teacher as you progress through the book
or in class or even your local music club. As I recall, I was first introduced at 3 or 4 or perhaps younger to the violin at a local childrens music club while the adults played children songs. One of the most memorable experience. You will find that you will progress fast and efficiently through the book alone but you're in good hands with the DVD that accompanies the book (yes, 2 DVD's...am I bragging 2 DVD's). If you're type A...you may need to refer to a teacher or friend for finger work or can go online...if you don't like to wait to course through the lessons. LOVE THE BOOK! It's EXCELLENT. Check with your local music store and see if they too offer lessons and overlap them, but that you don't need to do...there are also many online courses too to supplement all three...always a need to supplement the first source and the required courses even in college. With ABC's of Violin alone...everyone will do GREAT....even without making many references at all...the book is meant to self sustain and contain the student to manageable short lessons that scalfold learning up and to the very end...it is user friendly and manageable. You'll be playing songs in no time...as most of the songs are songs we've heard before. ABC's of Violin by Janice Tucker Rhoda is EXCELLENT and made for everyone. Don't get confused. It is a complete violin course. THE GOAL IS TO FOCUS ON THE SONG AND NOTES SHE'D LIKE YOU TO LEARN AND THE SONGS ARE NOT PREDICTABLE TO COMPLEMENT A COMPLETE CHALLENGING BRAIN LEARNING EXPERIENCE...EDUCATION AND FOOD FOR THE BRAIN. THE SONGS LIKE ANY ORCHESTRA CAN BE PLAYED IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS HOWEVER THERE ARE PREFERENCES WHILE YOU CAN MAKE THE SUIT YOUR NEEDS...EACH SONG COMES WITH RECOMMENDATIONS. AND THAT'S THE WAY IT WAS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ORCHESTRA...YAH, ORCHESTRA FOR CHILDREN GET THAT...LOVE IT.
That being said, I would recommend Absolute Beginners Fiddle to start with. It does more explaining, has a CD that includes both an accompaniment and demonstration of each song, and gives a more guided approach to the violin. I like it better for learning, and this set better for songs. Oh and the
