I ruptured my left achilles tendon approximately two and a half years ago playing softball. It was a dreadful injury that sidelined me for almost a year from all sports related activities. I never want to go through it again.

Recently, my right achilles began to hurt after softball games and I started to panic. I remember my left achilles feeling the same way in the months leading up to the rupture, and I feared I would be looking at another surgery if I continued playing without addressing the issue. I've been wearing an ankle brace on the right foot as a precaution but the area still hurt with the tendinitis. I didn't want to give up softball as I get enjoyment out of the game and it keeps me active, so I started looking at support braces which are specifically designed to support the achilles.

I was most worried this particular brace was going to end up being too tight or too loose (based on some of the other reviews here), but it fit perfectly and gave me more confidence as soon as I put it on. I can only guess the people who have been complaining didn't go to the manufacturer's Web site [...] to see how to correctly measure to choose the appropriate size. You need to measure the circumference of your ankle ABOVE the lateral malleolus (the "knob" on the outside of your ankle) and compare it to the chart on the manufacturer's Web site to choose the correct size.

I've worn the brace now for two softball outings and the tendon soreness I was experiencing after the games has virtually disappeared. It is well worth the money if it keeps me playing and away from the operating table. Trust me, a hundred dollar investment is chump change compared to the misery of dealing with a rupture and the long recovery period after surgery.

UPDATE 1/11/14: I was so happy with this product that I asked for another one for my left ankle (the one that was originally ruptured) for Christmas. I now wear these braces on BOTH ankles when I play softball and it has made all the difference in the world. I'm 44 and I thought I couldn't run anymore. Now, I run again like I'm in my 20's with no more trepidation that I'm going to "blow a tire". Can't say enough about how these braces have helped me.

I have had achilles tendonosis for 4 years. I've been in and out of a walking boot 7 times since then, I have down numerous hours of physical therapy and rehab, and have spent A LOT of money to go to ankle specialists just to hear them tell me the same thing over and over!
I played pro-basketball, but decided to give it up until I got better, as to not risk tearing my achilles. As a result, I gained 30 pounds, still had the hard callus on the back of my heel, and had a bad burning pain running up and down my calf from my achilles.
I thought to order this brace a year and a half ago, but felt it was too much money for a brace that I didn't "need" (the doctors kept saying rest and theraphy would heal it). This year, I decided, "I tried everything else, why not invest in this and see how it goes"? I'M SOOO HAPPY I BOUGHT THIS! I WISH I'D BOUGHT IT SOONER! ;-) After the few seconds that I put it on, I felt IMMEDIATE RELIEF! I did an intense beach bootcamp workout the second day I had it (trying to lose the 30lbs) and I had NO PAIN afterwards..not from my achilles anyways.
I look forward to getting back to basketball and not walking with a limp, w/this brace, I'm optimistic about the future!

I was hoping this would be a cure all but, alas, it was not. However, it does definitely help. It eased the burning and made standing from a sitting position a lot more comfortable. My only negative report is that the dark blue portion forms a wrinkle on top of my foot. After several hours it causes discomfort and I have to remove the whole thing. Definitely worth the money.

My nasty tendonitis has vastly improved and I am back to running. I wear the Bauerfeind while running and then ice the Achilles with it on afterwards. The gel inserts get quite cold and I think this helps. I also wear KT tape, always. Obviously, I don't know for sure if its actually the Bauerfeind that is helping, or the KT tape, or both, or if its a natural healing process. In any event, I'm pleased with the result.

I have Haglunds and tried a few "cheaper" ankle supports. I finally ordered this and now wish that I had bought it from the beginning. The only draw back is that it's a bit on the bulky side. It fits great with sneakers but not so much with dress shoes.
