Descripción del producto
Doody's Book Review Service, 18-AUG-08, Danielle Calix, MD, Ochsner for Children -- "This is the fifth edition of an up-to-date, comprehensive, and practical guide to the care of adolescents and the unique issues in this area...It is meant as a daily reference for practicing healthcare professionals. Adolescent medicine is a constantly evolving field requiring frequent incorporation of newer data, research, and resources. In this regard, the authors meet the objectives. The book is written for all healthcare professionals involved in the care of adolescents. "Beginning with a brief overview of normal pubertal changes and physiology, the book then comprehensively addresses commonly encountered abnormalities and variations from the norm. Relevant issues such as obesity, hypertension, sports participation, and topics related to sexual activity, are well represented. Also quite useful are the various algorithms, health forms, and web sites which can be provided to patients and their families for further research and education. "This will be an invaluable reference in day-to-day care of adolescent patients and their families. The new chapters, updates of existing chapters, and the addition of pertinent websites justify this fifth edition."-Doody's Book Review Service (Weighted Numerical Score: 94; 4 Stars)
Reseña del editor
Established for over twenty years as the "bible" of adolescent medicine, Dr. Neinstein's best-selling clinical reference is in its thoroughly updated Fifth Edition. This practical, easy-to-use guide is a staple in health care facilities that treat adolescents, is widely used for board preparation, and is recommended by the American College of Physicians for their internal medicine library. This edition has four new Associate Editors and new contributors for almost all chapters. The substance abuse section has been completely reorganized. New chapters cover psychosomatic illness and complementary medicine. Each chapter lists Websites where professionals, teenagers, and parents can find up-to-the-minute information.

In this day and age, it is downright criminal to not have an online learning center or CD that accompanies the book, with materials (including quizzes) that reinforce the chapters in the book. I could not believe there was no supplemental online or CD material for this expensive textbook. Again, an example of the publisher being a cheapskate.
The addition of outside website information in each chapter does not make this book much better, in my opinion. Websites change frequently, and anyone with decent Google skills -- and smart enough to be studying medicine in the first place -- can find good-quality information on the internet.
