Drive . . . and grow rich!

The bestselling author of Investment Biker is back from the ultimate road trip: a three-year drive around the world that would ultimately set the Guinness record for the longest continuous car journey. In Adventure Capitalist, legendary investor Jim Rogers, dubbed “the Indiana Jones of finance” by Time magazine, proves that the best way to profit from the global situation is to see the world mile by mile. “While I have never patronized a prostitute,” he writes, “I know that one can learn more about a country from speaking to the madam of a brothel or a black marketeer than from meeting a foreign minister.”

Behind the wheel of a sunburst-yellow, custom-built convertible Mercedes, Rogers and his fiancée, Paige Parker, began their “Millennium Adventure” on January 1, 1999, from Iceland. They traveled through 116 countries, including many where most have rarely ventured, such as Saudi Arabia, Myanmar, Angola, Sudan, Congo, Colombia, and East Timor. They drove through war zones, deserts, jungles, epidemics, and blizzards. They had many narrow escapes.

They camped with nomads and camels in the western Sahara. They ate silkworms, iguanas, snakes, termites, guinea pigs, porcupines, crocodiles, and grasshoppers.

Best of all, they saw the real world from the ground up—the only vantage point from which it can be truly understood—economically, politically, and socially.

Here are just a few of the author’s conclusions:

• The new commodity bull market has started.
• The twenty-first century will belong to China.
• There is a dramatic shortage of women developing in Asia.
• Pakistan is on the verge of disintegrating.
• India, like many other large nations, will break into several countries.
• The Euro is doomed to fail.
• There are fortunes to be made in Angola.
• Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) are a scam.
• Bolivia is a comer after decades of instability, thanks to gigantic amounts of natural gas.

Adventure Capitalist is the most opinionated, sprawling, adventurous journey you’re likely to take within the pages of a book—the perfect read for armchair adventurers, global investors, car enthusiasts, and anyone interested in seeing the world and understanding it as it really is.

I liked this book better than the motorcycle trip that he previously wrote.

He makes a lot of predictions and now with the passage of time we can see that he wasn't always correct. On the other hand I loved his take on various world situations.

My only issue is that he portrays this trip as a 2-person trip wth a Mercedes. Most of the time it was a 5-person trip with a big truck behind them. Having a film crew with you changes the dynamic of the story.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas A history lesson in addition to a primer on international investing 9 de enero de 2008

Mr. Rogers is dead-on right about many things, and there are things that he is wrong about. Being close to the ground before investing internationally is amazingly brave and smart. His claim that you can learn more about a country in 10 minutes speaking to a prositute than you can in 1 hour speaking to the country's head of state is a bold and funny claim, but I am certain there is truth to it.

He picks investments based on a number of unorthodox factors. Reading some of these scathing reviews from fellow Amazon readers, I can't help but wonder what the reviewers' investment returns look like. Everyone's a critic, but who can back up what he/she says? I know Jim Rogers can, for if there's one thing you can't argue against Jim Rogers, it is the success of his investments.

The book is very interesting, because even though it is autobiographical, it has the element of fiction: did that really happen, you're left wondering as he almost drove off a mountain in an Icelandic Blizzard before the trip even started. Did he really drive through the Sahara Desert behind a military convoy in a bright yellow Mercedes?? I could ask a million similar rhetorical questions, but if you're here reading my review, I would highly recommend reading the book instead.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas This investment-daredevil got me going 6 de agosto de 2014

I started reading questioning myself why would someone drive a yellow Mercedes into war zones and third world countries? And he doesn't get shot. I still think he is a daredevil, but also a wise one, and a compassionate one. Having not much trade expertise of my own, Jim Rogers isn't the man who will tell me what to sell or buy. But he showed me a - for me at last - fresh view of looking at the world. Having read lots of travel stories, I found this one very stimulating and I noticed it changed my perspective during my folowing travels. It broadend my view and my range of critical questions and thoughts. I did not read the other books Jim Rogers wrote before, I will work my way back and read from other authors the technical stuff you need to know about investing. But it is Jim who got me going!

When I began to read this book, I just finished my 7 weeks trip across the US. I felt really depressed at the beginning; I was exhausted physically and mentally. I was confused about my future since I just graduated. People kept on asking me what's my next step. I saw too much what I didn't expect, and I suspected I had learned anything real from school or media. Then I picked up this book because I know I can trust someone who has read a lot, traveled a lot, and done a lot. After reading it, I feel more better and more confident to chase my dream. If you want to understand the real world, this book will be a good start.

Jim Roger's knows investing, and he makes it interesting. Don't read this book if you think you're going to get a hot investment tip. He moves too quickly to focus on any one country's investment potential. It's a combination of geography, history, and capitalism. You will learn more about the state of the world than investing. I now know many tidbits about countries that I never knew previously.
Do you know how Africa's geography will most likely change within the next two decades? Wonder how Apartheid is progressing in South Africa? The best African country to vacation in, and why? The freedom in China that we never hear about? The "feed the children" programs, and how they are corrupted once they ARRIVE in Africa?
I've focuses in on Africa here, but that's what I found most interesting. Again, you will not become an expert currency trader here, but you will attain valuable insight into world affairs.
