Descripción del producto
"This book is an impressive debut. Frequent allusions to music, psychology, literature and art enrich this satisfying narrative." Prof. Norbert Platz (Professor of Literature, University of Trier) "Libor Mikeska's unique novel is compelling right from the very first page. Such an impressive literary juggling act of real life scenes, recurring dream sequences, musical intermezzos and even surrealist time-warping make it a spellbinding read!" Charles Robin Broad (Composer extraordinaire)
Reseña del editor
Leaving familiar shores, René takes the plunge and sets out to discover life in mystical Prague. However he gets more than he'd bargained for when various twists of fate and chance encounters make everything possible in this intriguing city, where he not only learns of the unpredictability of life itself, the impermanence of ideal love, but also the truth about Kafka's secret trip to Australia! I especially appreciated the fact that there's no strict linearity in the sequence of events, like for example the occasional appearance of a string quartet, trying to cope with Janacek's difficult music pieces. This refreshing approach of telling a story using flashbacks, surrealistic trips back in time as well as dream sequences seems to make the story understandable as they intermingle with real life experiences in the book. This is a great stylistic device, adding dramatic qualities to the narration and expressing varied layers of reality! The aesthetically written erotic scenes as well as the clever use of subtly shrouding the protagonist's relationship in mystery does wonders in arousing the reader's eagerness to read on, all whilst leaving it up to the readers to draw their own conclusions.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Libor Mikeska's first novel and I think it has many features which could make it a really popular book. The whole of chapter 15 was brilliant and another highlight was chapter 28 and what an ending!!!!!!!
