5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Great speaker overall, excellent speaker for the price. 16 de septiembre de 2009

These Altec Lansings are quite a bit of speaker for the money. Having previous experience with Creative, Logitech, and Altec Lansing, I initially wanted to give those a shot, but eliminated the Creatives due to price.

The Logitech system, the X-240, was an ok set. Decent looking, similar wattage, and the sub even had a bass volume knob. Speaking of the sub, it is a great little piece, delivering deep, loud bass when asked with minimal distortion.

However, I use my computer speakers mostly for music, and here is where the Altecs take the cake. Where the Logitechs sounded muddy and flat, the Altecs are crisp, clear and open. The mids and highs are great. The satellites are far superior to the Logitech. The Altecs sub is a heavy, well built and quite attractive. I found that where the Logitechs sub boomed, the Altec nicely integrated the bass with the mids/highs. The bass is nice and controlled, and can get loud without distortion. The only plus the logitech had, musically, over the Altec was that the sub on the Logitech would get louder and had a volume control, where the Altec does not. However, for musical purposes, the Altec sub definitely has more than enough kick.

My conclusion is that each set has its own merit. For games and movies, where clarity is less important and bass is, go for the Logitech. But if you want crisp, clear sound with well rounded but not super loud bass, Altec is the clear winner.

3.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Great sound and look for the price with ONE ANNOYING PROBLEM! Audio Static interference 6 de enero de 2017
Por Alex Foster - Publicado en Amazon.com
Estilo: VS2621 Compra verificada
I purchased these speakers as a low-cost desktop setup and from their high reviews on other tech sites, prime was a plus too. Speakers have been working great for the last year but about two months ago I would get terrible static/popping/interference noises that would come from any input, iphone/PC etc. I could not figure it out and tried a new audio cable through the front aux jack of the speakers and adjusting the volume tone carefully to no avail. Every time the volume was barely up the static would drown out the music at its' peaks.

After a quick google about static through speakers I found a solution. Move your sub-woofer away from any outlets/AC Adapters/Power cables and run the single speaker cable from the sub straight upward also away from any power cables and adapters. You can test this by moving the sub out from your setup and wires and play music, then pickup the sub and push it back in. Chances are good that your interference will come back.

I zip-tied some cables and reorganized and now I have my speakers back!

1.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Beware. Manufacturer will not honor warranty unless on their list of authorized sellers. 11 de septiembre de 2013
Por Kindle Customer - Publicado en Amazon.com
Estilo: VS2621 Compra verificada
As many other reviewers have reported the same, the subwoofer began to emit a constant loud humming noise even when all input wires are disconnected. I purchased the system new on Amazon on Nov 1, 2012. Today is Sept 10, 2013. The product is supposed to be warrantied for 1 year. The seller was Firemall and the fulfillment was by Amazon with 2 day Amazon Prime service.
So, I contacted Altec Lansing via their online support process describing the problem and requesting that they repair or replace the system.
Altec Lansing asked who the seller was that I purchased it from on Amazon. So I checked the order and responded that it was a company called Firemall. This was the response:
"I am so sorry that you are having difficulty with your product. Unfortunately there are so many online resellers of our products, that do not necessarily purchase them from one of our approved dealers or retailers. A lot of resellers on Amazon sell used products, and we do not honor our warranty for units purchased through them. Firemall is not an authorized retailer/reseller, I apologize! You will need to contact them directly for any warranty issues."
I repeated that I purchased it new on Amazon and asked her to escalate it. This was the response:
"It was sold by Firemall, they are not one of our authorized retailers. I am sorry but our policy is very strict, we only warranty if purchased from one of our authorized retailers. Approval for warranty will not be approved otherwise. I am sorry. You need to contact Amazon/firemall for warranty issues on your product."
I was to say the least shocked and dismayed. So I called Amazon and asked if they could provide a statement of some kind reiterating that I purchased the product new. The Amazon rep was extremely nice and helpful. She said that it was the first time she has ever heard of a manufacturer requiring that the seller be on their list of authorized retailers for the manufacturer to honor their warranty. She felt so bad for my situation (implying I think correctly that I am a victim of Altec Landsin's crazy warranty policy) and asked me to hold for a few moments. She then came back on the phone and said that she was given approval by her supervisor to do a one time exception to Amazon's return policy and said that Amazon would accept the system back for a full refund and provided me a return mailing label so that the return shipping would be free of charge for me! AMAZON IS THE BEST!!!!! I LOVE AMAZON!!!

1) So, first and most importantly: Stay clear of Altec Landsing! Despite their being a large manufacturer, they do NOT stand behind their products and contain unreasonable conditions that are unknown to potential buyers of their products.

2) Second, stay clear of this product because the subwoofer goes bad with a loud humming noise.

3) Third, TWO THUMBS UP FOR AMAZON. I was so happy and relieved, that I submitted the following comment to the feedback at Amazon after clicking "Yes" to did this solve my question: "[The representative's name] and her supervisor are really wonderful members of the Amazon staff. They really exemplify the very special extraordinary high quality of Amazon that distinguishes Amazon above and beyond all other sellers. I LOVE Amazon!!!!! Thank you so much for helping me with the crazy issue I was facing!!! You're the best!!!"

4) Fourth, Eight days ago, I had bought the Cyber Acoustics CA-5402 Platinum Series High Performance 5.1 Speaker System (Black) for a different purpose and I love it. Here's Amazon's link to it: Cyber Acoustics CA-5402 Platinum Series High Performance 5.1 Speaker System (Black) So I thought about buying another CA-5402 to replace the garbage Altec Lansing one. So, I called Cyber Acoustics and spoke with their tech support to make sure that their warranty is normal. (Unlike Altec Landsing, Cyber Acoustics answers the phone by the way!) The Cyber Acoustics rep was so nice and confirmed and assured me that Cyber Acoustics's warranty is normal and that they even go out of their way to ensure that their customers are happy. They have even helped customers who had bought Cyber Acoustics products on Ebay. The Cyber Acoustics rep also said that like Amazon, she has never heard of a company with a warranty policy like Altec Lansing's. So, I sent the Altec Landsing tech support's email thread to the Cyber Acoustics rep just in case it would be helpful to the Cyber Acoustics company. AND right after the call with her, I bought my second Cyber Acoustics CA-5402 speaker system at Amazon to replace the Altec Landsing one.

(By the way, I rarely write reviews. I have absolutely no affiliation with Altec Landsing, Cyber Acoustics, or any other such company. I run a translation services agency. Just wanted to mention because I am reporting a very negative experience with one company and positive one with another and I really want this experience to help other people - this post IS authentic - look at the few other reviews that I have written about other products if you want to check.)

The following is the email thread with Altec Landsing so you can see Altec Landsing's "customer support" in action:

Thanks for contacting Altec Lansing.

Hi D2r2p0c3,

Your request (#56867) has been deemed solved.

Valerie, Sep 10 02:10 pm (EDT):

Hi Jeff,

In your previous email it stated:

It was "Sold by" Firemall LLC and fulfilled by Amazon Prime Two-Day Shipping.

It was sold by Firemall, they are not one of our authorized retailers. I am sorry but our policy is very strict, we only warranty if purchased from one of our authorized retailers. Approval for warranty will not be approved otherwise. I am sorry. You need to contact Amazon/firemall for warranty issues on your product.

Valerie,

Perhaps my wording was misleading. This was not an Amazon marketplace sale.
This was a new product sale by Amazon itself.
The seller was Amazon - brand new product.

Please escalate if needed.

By the way, I have not written a review yet on Amazon and look forward
to writing a positive review about my experience with Altec Lansinc's
honoring its warranty including when customers purchase through Amazon.

Thank you,
Jeff

Thank you for your prompt reply.

It was "Sold by" Firemall LLC and fulfilled by Amazon Prime Two-Day Shipping.
The order date was November 1, 2012 and the delivery estimate (they don't show the delivery date) that is on the online Amazon invoice is November 5, 2012.

Thank you,
Jeff

Hi,

If it was purchased from an authorized retailer it would have a 1 yr. warranty with us. Who was the seller from your Amazon order and what was the date of purchase?

I bought the VS2621 speaker system from Amazon.com.
The subwoofer hums and it is still under warranty. The tone is at a low setting and thus it is not that. Hums even when stereo wire is disconnected.
Please repair this unit or replace it.
Thank you.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Excellent sound - annoyingly short cables 16 de marzo de 2016
Por Cosmo H. - Publicado en Amazon.com
Estilo: MX6021 Compra verificada
I doubt there are desktop speakers available at this price point that sound better than these. I purchased these because: 1) I have the less expensive Altec Lansing VS2621 set on another desktop and have been very happy with those, and 2) they're listed on Cnet's best PC speakers of 2016 list just behind Audioengine models that start around $100 more. The sound quality is fantastic. I'm docking them a single star for the annoyingly short cables that are very difficult (but not impossible) to extend. The Cnet review refers to the cables as proprietary, which is not technically true. The cables are mini DIN (mdin) and can be extended with somewhat readily available extension cables from Monoprice and other vendors. The speaker cables are mdin 4-pins, otherwise known as S-video, which people over 40 probably remember from high-end VCRs. The volume controller is an mdin 8-pin, which was used by Apple for laser printers long ago. I was able to get all 3, but didn't feel like waiting for extender cables for the mdin 4 cables (male and female end) and opted for the standard S-video cable (2 male ends) paired with gender changers since they were in stock. Unfortunately the gender changers wouldn't stay firmly connected and I ended up aborting the attempt and putting the subwoofer under the desk where the stock cables would reach.

Enough about the cables. The main reason I bought these is for the sound quality, and I'm not disappointed. The highs are extremely clear and detailed. The tweeters could be described as bright, but normally I think of brightness as a negative attribute because I find bright speakers fatiguing to listen to for extended periods. I don't find I'm tiring of listening to these for hours at a time, I think because the highs are so accurate and the overall response is flat. Because the satellites are 2-way and the subwoofer goes down to 40Hz, the entire spectrum is well covered. The subwoofer is plenty powerful enough to shake the floor at moderate volume. Stereo imaging is very good, presenting a wide soundstage that appears to extend from the center of the monitor out past the edges of the desk.

Lastly, the aesthetics are very nice - and exactly what I was looking for. The computer desk I have has a tinted glass top that exactly matches the smoked plexiglass of the satellites such that they almost appear to be an extension of the desk surface. The volume knob has amber LEDs that give it sort of a retro look and the volume/tone indicator bar rotates through a series of animations when idle. The animations don't serve any useful purpose, but I think it adds to the retro feel. I don't know if that's what they were going for, but I like it. In summary - if you're interested in very good sound for a reasonable price, like the look (probably not for everyone), and can place the subwoofer in close proximity to the satellites, I highly recommend these.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas What idiot put the power switch on the sub-woofer? 8 de julio de 2016
Por Ann E. Fox - Publicado en Amazon.com
Estilo: VS2621 Compra verificada
So I had an old pair of Creative speakers that started cutting out and decided to upgrade to a fuller sound. In that sense, this speaker set succeeds. Others have noted that the glossy surface of the speakers can be a dust magnet and that they aren't particularly loud. I find them perfectly acceptable for Pandora streaming when listening at my computer and am pleased by the deeper bass offered by the sub-woofer compared to my prior, two-speaker setup.

The power switch for the unit is located on the sub-woofer which I would prefer to place under my computer work station in the corner which would require me to crawl under the desk each time that I wanted to turn the unit on. Have others place the sub-woofer someplace more convenient, sacrificing the deeper bass by placing it in the corner? Seems like a design fail to me.

For ~$45 it's not worth making a big stink -- and the sound is fine for computer audio streaming -- but the power switch placement certainly seems like an odd choice.
