As children, they watched their daed die. As adults, can these Amish siblings find the courage to risk their hearts for love?

When fourteen-year-old Samuel Hershberger and his nine-year-old sister Judith witness their daed's death in the family cornfield, their lives are irrevocably changed. Seven years later, Judith confronts her helplessness by taking on a calling to heal, but will she be able to reconcile her love of Englischer medicine with her life as an Amish woman and growing love for Isaac, a visiting preacher's handsome son? And what about Samuel, who at twenty-one is still unable to decide between an Englischer or Amish life? Will Miriam Umble, the beautiful and troubled Amish girl who Samuel agrees to help return home to Elkhart, Indiana, be the key to restoring his faith? Or will their secrets break each other's hearts? Find out in Amish Connections, a three novella collection, parts 5-7 of the Out of Darkness Amish Romance series.

I picked this book up on a friend's recommendation, and I wasn't sure how much I'd like the story as this was my first experience of Amish fiction, but from the prologue of the first book I was totally hooked! I LOVED the characters! Ms. Price bought them and their struggles to life on the page, and she wasn't afraid to give her characters difficult problems. I was on the edge of my seat wondering how Judith would be able to have her love without giving up her dream of studying medicine, and I also really felt for Miriam her secret (which I won't get into here because it would give too much away!) Each of the books in Amish Connections was a complete story, and I'd have been happy with any one of them, but I was happier that I bought the collection not only because it was cheaper but because the parts really did tie together well. I hope Ms. Price comes back to these characters in other books, especially Andrew and Rachel, because I really want to know what happens with them.

I know, I know, Amish fiction? Yes, really. There's something about the innocence and faith of it all that reassures me. It feels like a snuggly blanket on a cold night, you know?

Anyway, onto my review. I read the free installment of this novel and had to go ahead and buy the whole thing. I reading the first three parts of the author's OUT OF DARKNESS series a few months back, so when I found out she had written a book about Samuel from the first series, I knew I at least had to check it out. It's a little different from the traditional Amish novel, but as far as I'm concerned, the risk the author takes works. The novella format is actually pretty satisfying, and I liked how while each story stood on its own, they all worked well together as an overarching narrative of faith and redemption.

If I had to pick a favorite part, I'd say the road trip with Miriam and Samuel, mostly because I've never really seen anything like that in Amish fiction. And who doesn't like a good road trip story? But honestly, I liked it all. The novel wasn't afraid to take chances, for example, showing us how emergency medicine works in the Amish world. Hopefully the author will write more in this world, so we can see what happens to the other characters, especially Andrew. Go read it!

Amish Connections (Out of Darkness MEGABOOK 2 - Amish Connections 1-3 holds the saga of an Amish family, the father of which dies on an intensely hot day in his cornfield within plain view of his seven-year-old daughter Judith and his wife, while his eleven-year-old son Samuel runs for help and how that crucial event traumatically affects the children as adults: Samuel, who feels he couldn't run fast enough to save his father's life and continues to "run" as an adult, and Judith who feels called to an Englischer medical profession and how it affects her as thoughts of being a dedicated Amish wife conflict with her thoughts of a career to save lives.

The stories are exquisitely told, with great compassion, unique twists (definitely not found in classic Amish fiction) that make the story sing and the reader's soul soar. Makes you want to read more by this author. Highly recommended.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas An Unique and Enjoyable Read 25 de octubre de 2013

I was recommended Amish Connections by a friend and was initially skeptical being into the horror/police/drama genre. I have to say that I found this book very refreshing. It captured all of the elements that is in a good read; love, angst, guilt, crime, hope... What was unique about this story was it was from the Amish perspective which made it all the more interesting. I especially loved the dynamics between Samuel and Miriam during their road trip and Judith's passion for medicine was moving. Overall, this was a moving and quick read that had lasting impressions.

The dialogue is good - plot line okay, but I was shocked, surprised, stunned to hear the characters swearing. I know several Amish families - I never hear them saying "O.M.G." I can't even bring myself to write out the words. It feels so very wrong. Our culture has lost total respect for God, and after reading this language the 2nd time, I can't bring myself to even finish the book, thus far.
