First of all, I never read romance.
And when I say never I mean never.
I'm more into non-fiction and sci-fi, so this is a new venture.
I picked this story up because I want to broaden my horizon - reading something I normally NEVER pick up,
just to see what the grass on the other side looks like.

And despite my initial worries, I was pleasantly surprised :

The story of a Canadian of Asian heritage falling in love with an Austrian (which she meets during her travels) is quite charming,
and the minor "culture" clash creates some smirks.

I especially like the dynamics of their differences: a charming European (Austrian) and a first generation Chinese from Canada - this makes
up for some interesting cliche shattering (e.g. expecting asian women to be compliant, even when they're raised in a Western country.)

The setting is mostly in Austria during Winter which creates a comfortable and cozy atmosphere - probably because I'm from Germany and it's similar.
There is not much of a story - it's mostly about two peeps falling in love, losing each other and then meeting again a decade later.

The prose is wonderfully terse and not kitschy - a bias that I have towards most romance writing by females.
The flirtation is seductive and the love-making sequences are dynamic and intense - they almost seem like fighting sequences to me,
but hey, I'm a male, so that comes with the territory.

I recommend this short read to anyone who's even partly interested in romance, because of the unique setting, diverse characters
and passionate sex scene writing.

Okay, first off I have to admit this is my first endeavor at reading erotica. My reason or excuse, depending on your point of view, was it wasn’t my thing. I never gave the genre much of a thought aside from, “Oh that’s a good book you say? Cool.” You see, romance and erotica stories don’t do a whole lot for me. I’m a guy and we like things that go boom or get shot, beaten up, bludgeoned, and so on. I like action and so I never read anything considered for “bored housewives”.

Now that I’ve got all of that out of the way, why did I read The Austrian and the Asian, you ask? Well, there’s two reasons. First, I’ve heard some of the reviews for Eden’s books through the grapevine and her style intrigued me.

Second, my wife read it and told me how much she enjoyed it and how the writing style reminded her of mine. Hey, those of us with formal writing styles need to stick together, right?

So, being the curious and open-minded person I am, I picked up a copy a few weeks back and started reading it a short time ago. One of the first things I noticed was the lack of stereotypes. When one thinks of erotica, I imagine an adult film put on paper similar to Playboy forums. (Guys, you know what I mean.)

From the beginning, Eden wove us into the mind of her character as she struggled to understand the man whose home she was staying at while in Austria. It’s the type of story we’ve all had to deal with at some point. Does he/she like me? Do I stand a chance? And of course the rationalization we all go through by saying, “they weren’t interested” or “I didn’t know what they wanted”. As the characters go through this metamorphosis, we’re drawn into their lives and want to see them live happily ever after.

As a first time reader of this genre, I was pleasantly surprised and will probably check out Eden’s other books at some point.

I read Eden Baylee's The Austrian and the Asian on my laptop in the hills of Chiang Mai, Thailand, while sitting on a veranda facing south and a declining sun. On a table beside me, a carafe of cold Chilean white wine and a bowl of home-made French bread. Some good classical music would have come in handy and sealed the ambience, but that was lacking. Not having dived into the genre in some time, I was in the mood for some serious erotica. And I wasn't disappointed; I enjoyed it immensely.
It's a novella, short and sweet and as much romantic as it is erotic. It's well plotted and written, with keenly developed characters and realistic dialogue. Ms. Baylee writes well. I find her writing style has an attractive cadence that flows smoothly and is easy to read. I finished it within two hours.
The story of an encounter and consequent love affair between a Canadian/Chinese girl, Elena, and Stefan, an Austrian architect, which takes us from Thailand's Pukhet beaches to the ski slopes of Austria, on to Canada and back to Austria, is well told with a vibrant gusto and some poignancy. The love (erotic) scenes come in, as they should, on cue with urgency and a definite rush; the first bedroom encounter seriously turned me on. I wanted to be in Stefan's place. The writer handles these scenes playfully, going from gentle and tender on to powerful and demanding, with a deft control. This convinces me of a bias I have: women write far better erotica than men, any day.
Male writers in this genre, tend to write for male titillation; they feel they know what men want. Many, using female pen names, and a sexy photo take it further. Much of the stuff they write must turn women off, and a lot of it is hilarious even coming from otherwise talented writers. Here then is a genuine female writer of erotica who can excite both sexes in the best possible way.
I highly recommend this little book. If erotica is your thing, this will do the trick. Better to be read with a lover, before a fire on a Sunday afternoon.

Whenever I tackle a novel/novella with the label `erotica' on it, my reading approach undergoes a subtle metamorphosis. With any other fiction genre I take it for granted that sex will not be the central tenet of the story, but with an erotic work I proceed on the basis that the primary - and perhaps only - purpose of the work before me is to arouse. A casual glance through much of the erotica available in the market today tends to confirm my prejudice that the `stories' are little more than thinly-veiled excuses for sexual encounters between sketchily-drawn characters about whom I could care less.

I would however have to concede that there are writers of erotica who have produced works of quality, but that these are very much in the minority. What these few talented writers share is an understanding that desire is a creature of the mind and that there are many ways to evoke longing, not simply the most obvious one via a sweaty anatomy lesson.

Eden Baylee falls into this rare category. If you are simply looking for cheap titillation, I suggest you look elsewhere. Ms Baylee does self-evidently write sex scenes, but this tale would survive without them. This is a chronicle about real people, a coming-together of alien cultures, misunderstandings, insecurities, and that most human of emotions, regret. If you don't enjoy descriptions of sexual activity, then skip these scenes and read `The Austrian and the Asian' for what it really is; a well-crafted and emotionally raw love story.

I took advantage of the Amazon Prime Kindle Lending Library perk to read The Austrian and the Asian, which is one of four short stories in the Fall into Winter Anthology. Lately, I have been expanding my horizons and reading different genres outside of my normal reading list. I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading 'The Austrian and the Asian' since it is in the Erotica category, but let me tell you, I am very glad I did.

The Austrian and the Asian is not a story about sex. I think that is the most important thing I learned when reading this short story. As a matter of fact, it actually plays a very small role in the story. The majority of the story is about an Asian-Canadian woman who falls in love with an Austrian she meets while on holiday. It's a very good intercultural story of romance that left me wanting to read more after the story ended.

Eden Baylee did an excellent job of storytelling with The Austrian and the Asian. If you're looking for a quick romantic read (it's about 18,000 words), with a bit of steamy sex thrown in, you will enjoy this short story.
