What a great introduction to an author I haven't previously come across.
What I enjoyed in this book trilogy was that it didn't dwell too much on technobabble. Instead Stephen Sweeney gives us a much more human story as humanity battles against a foe which is both surprising and deadly to the combatants in equal measure. Death on a Galactic scale, served up thanks to a mistake.
The central characters are five pilots recruited initially to a secret starfighter program, which has cost vast amounts and only has five examples built. These practically indestructible fighters also harbour a darker purpose to their manufacture. It's the interplay of complex, well-drawn characters that make this story for me rather than some colossal space battle with cardboard cutout crews.
Well worth having in your Sci-Fi collection.
