5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Bring Pro-Audio to Consumer Cameras 26 de junio de 2010

I am the co-founder of a small hyperlocal video news company. When we started the business we obviously needed to extract as much value out of our gear as possible. That meant choosing consumer equipment for most of our production workflow, including using small Canon Vixia HD cameras over more expensive professional models.

Of course good video requires good audio, and while the Vixia has a microphone port they don't work out of the box with high quality microphones. We initially purchased expensive Sennheiser wireless kits to make the connection, but those ended up costing more than the camera did! Enter the Beachtek box.

This little device, paired up with a Shure SM58LC Cardioid Dynamic Microphone, delivers exceptional audio for less than $300. The sound is clean, crisp, and best of all very easy for our field reporters to adjust using the Beachtek's dials. This little box is sturdy and survives all of the abuse they are subjected to being dragged from one story to the next.

I highly recommend.

The BeachTek DXA-2T. I just received this wonderful little package today. So far in my initial testing, I really like this little guy. It has 2 balanced XLR connectors, which means, with an XLR connector and a good mic cable, you might go as much as 1,000 ft between the microphone and the camera (though I suppose your camera wouldn't shoot that far) It has very nice Neutrik connectors which are the best in the world. I tested it with a Shure SM57 and thought the audio was very nice. It has a switch so that you can get a single microphone to come into your camera as both left and right channel. It's balanced very well, and my Canon GL-2 had no problem standing on a table with the DXA-2T under it. Overall, my initial impression is that this is a VERY nice piece of gear. There is no phantom power, so you would need another add on piece if you wanted to use a condenser microphone.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Affordable Audio Adapter for DSLR 8 de abril de 2013

I use this with my Canon 5d MKII and it's a great add-on. Snaps right on the bottom, very simple to use and does exactly what it should, allowing high quality XLR-mics to plug in easily to the camera. Pretty simple to use, the headphone function doesn't seem to work incredibly well for listening to audio while recording, but in my opinion if you were having someone with headphones checking audio and you're shooting with this device they are most likely your sound operator and would be listening on their own system. My only recommendation for potential buyers is to make sure that the mics they want to use with this are not phantom powered, this adapter does not support phantom mics (you have to buy the more expensive BeachTek device to get that), so beware that your mics to have their own power supply. Otherwise works like a charm and well.

1.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Terribly hissy, substandard sound. Would NOT recommend. 14 de junio de 2011

I bought this to use my Azden SGM-2X shotgun mic with my Canon Vixia HF11. I chose this adapter over the competitor's because I didn't want to have to deal with changing 9V batteries in the adapter.
This was a mistake.

After doing a week or so of research trying to find out why my audio was so terrible, I learned the following:
This XLR adapter is passive, which Beachtek claims to be a positive thing.
Unfortunately, without any pre-amp capabilities in the adapter, the camera's audio circuitry has to amplify the mic's signal by itself. Since most DSLR's and consumer video cameras don't have very good audio circuitry (one of the main reasons to buy an XLR adapter), the amplification adds an unbearable hiss to anything that is recorded, to the point of making the adapter completely unusable for its intended purpose.

The only way to reduce the hiss (on a consumer camera) is to turn down the mic input volume, but this makes any audio recorded too quiet to hear.

Basically, if you've got an XLR mic that you want to use for your camera and already have a method to amplify the mic signal or just don't care about the terrible background noise, you might be able to deal with this adapter, but otherwise, I wouldn't recommend it at all.

I hate leaving negative reviews, but in my opinion this adapter simply isn't worth buying, especially when there's a more functional alternative for the exact same price.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas A Must have Device 26 de marzo de 2012

Having purchased two Beachtek DX-a2t, I notice they are a bit shy in coming forward about some of their benefits.

For example if you only have a mono mic, using their switch, suddenly the audio appears across two channels. This saves hours trying to convert a mono signal to stereo in conversion software.

I also love the fact that you can hook it into any audio console and take the high level output direct into your camera. I recently filmed in a radio studio and got the DJ and music all in the one hit. Then i filmed a solo musician friend using 4 mics into the mixer with great results.

This is great device and solid as a rock. Now i have no limitations about capturing good audio. All my lame excusers are out the window. It is a must have device.
