It does what many engineers say it will do. This is NOT a high-end super full spectrum solution for people looking for a great sounding stereo speaker. Nor is it intended to be. This is like a TSA musical screening device... it displays your music and mixes in their brutally honest form for all to see. Today's headphones come in many sonic flavors, most over emphasize bass frequencies. Many affordable monitors are optimized to tweak the EQ to make things sizzle and boom. This speaker provides the audio truth about your mixes.

I use just one speaker positioned in the center of my music desk, some people use two as a pair. The goal is to send your mix out of a mid-rangey speaker to show you what you need more and less of in the mix. You will be surprised at what you hear, and when you adjust track levels based on this speaker your true stereo mixes will sound much better. People often harken back to a loved pair of Yamaha NS-10s... they did the same thing. They sounded like crap for a reason. If your mix sounds good on this speaker, it will sound great on a true stereo system.

I just wish I bought one of these when I started writing and mixing.

This meets my needs perfectly for a secondary check on my mixes in mono and on on smaller speaker. It has excellent clarity and consistency which I attribute to the non-ported design, which I absolutely was looking for! It lacks the bass of a ported speaker of the same size but makes up for this in terms of sound accuracy. As a secondary speaker, I move it around a lot and it's not as well protected as my main monitors. For this reason, I wish it came with a detachable protective speaker grill. Interestingly, I'm finding it to be a fun little speaker for my iPhone. I use a dual-to-single RCA cable attached to a 3.5 mm to RCA cable attached to my phone. I'm intrigued about the sonic differences between sealed and ported speakers--it would be very interesting to try two of these speakers together with a subwoofer (in comparison to my 8-inch ported monitors)...

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Does exactly what it was designed to do. 13 de agosto de 2011
Por Larry W. Hagood - Publicado en
First let me say that the appearance and heft of this speaker is awesome. As good as it looks in the picture it's even better in real life. Fit and finish is a 10+.
Some in the recording industry refer to this as a grot box. It's used to show recording engineers what the mix might sound like on a lower end system. That is, it's been scientifically designed, engineered and crafted to sound... well, kind of tinny and crappy compared to a typical reference monitor. Now you might be ready to click on to some other product and move on but wait... There is a very good reason a non recording engineer might buy this speaker. If you grew up in the 50's, 60's or 70's and when you listen to your favorite old tracks on your new multi-thousand dollar stereo system.. Yes you know it sounds great but there's just something not right about it... You KNOW what I'm talking about.
This is a good solution. Just plug your ipod/iphone/smartphone/mp3 player into the back of this thing, and play your favorite Tunes from the Monkees or the Who or Elvis or whatever you listened to back in the day and you'll see what I'm talking about.
I bought mine for listening to talk radio using the TuneInRadio app on my iphone. For talk radio the speaker is perfect. This sounds so much better than connecting the phone to some full range sound system.
I demonstrated the speaker to my girlfriend who knows nothing about audio. I played a Beatles tune on my iPhone through a Fostex PM2 MKII 8 reference monitor and then through the little Behritone C50A. The sound quality was obviously worse but right away she said, "it totally sounds a lot better on the little speaker". Then I played a modern rock song on the two speakers and she said "oh it sounds way better on the big speaker" (the Fostex)

I'm also a ham radio operator (AD5VM) and if you happen to be a ham, look no further for the perfect communications speaker for your tranceiver or SW receiver.

If you're going to use this with your phone or ipod you will need a 1/8" stereo to 1/4" mono adapter or cable. They're just a couple bucks.

I recommend this product to anyone who wants to use it to listen to pre-80's music, short wave, ham comms or talk radio. (and of course it makes a great grot box for recording purposes) Thanks Behringer for making pretty good products at incredibly low prices :)

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas An absolutely necessary addition to your main monitors 20 de enero de 2013
Por Alex - Publicado en
All I have to say about this is WOW. Ive been working on some songs for about a month now and this little monitor greatly improved my mixes in less than the hour that I've owned it. For example, mixing vocals into a track where hearing all the preciseness and imaging on my mains, it was difficult to get the volume just right.

This monitor sounds incredibly simplistic, has no depth or imaging, so it will flat-out tell you if the vocals, or whatever you need, are too loud. I tweaked the volume using this as reference, then switched back to my mains, and WOW. It finally sounds balanced.

I can see that going for those long studio sessions, this will "reset" you ears for maintaining a proper mix.

I was deciding to get this or the avantone/auratones. As long as you use this in addition to your main monitors, I feel the c50a gets the job done perfectly.

This has been, hands down, the best addition to my studio.

drop your mix into summed mono and run it through this... you'll hear what you need to hear for clarity purposes. also has a nice rubber padded bottom and mic thread to mount or set on your desk. i always use it to check my mixes, and has helped exponentially.
