Lying off the coast of Monterey, Bird Island is favored with tranquil beaches, coves and rocky hills. The island is home to a finishing school for girls, and a picturesque old hotel-in desperate need of repair. The hotel owner must sell plots of the island to finance renovation and enlargement.

Jack Vance was a grandmaster of speculative fiction, and wrote a great deal of other "genre" fiction, all of it readable at least. (I say "was" because he has stopped writing, although he is still living, at 96). This book is no exception. The characters are interesting, the situations fresh and exciting, the action moves right along, and, although having no pretensions to being anything other than (perhaps a bit dated) light entertainment, it is completely successful at what it purports to be.

I have been reading Jack Vance's Sci Fi for about 40 years and love his stuff. Never saw this book before and took a (cheap) gamble. I was disappointed. The odd spark now and then but not a patch on his usual quirky stories. Very dated. Only of interest to real die-hard fans.

Bird Isle is one of the most pleasant books that I have ever read. The plot meanders here and there as it follows the unlikely events on Bird Island. It is at all times engaging, but never intense or distressing. The result is perfect stress-relieving material and I recommend Bird Isle for just that purpose.

But that's not the typical Jack Vance book. Bird Isle doesn't have the murder, torture, and mutilation that I expect to read in a Jack Vance novel. It doesn't have bad guys performing horrible, unspeakable acts only to receive an equally horrible justice enacted upon them at the end of the story. Bird Isle is meant to be easy reading. But it's tame by Jack Vance standards and that's not what I signed up for.
