Half her family have been murdered in their beds. Her father is the prime suspect. And things are about to get a whole lot worse...

Graphic designer Dervla Johns wakes one morning to the news that her father, Warren, is missing and her stepmother and step-siblings were found dead in their beds. While the police hunt for Warren, Dervla searches for answers. Could her father really be a killer? Refusing to be warned off by police threats, or intimidated by the reporter who appears to be following her, she delves into her family's past.

But as she uncovers one shocking secret after another, Dervla's world is rocked further by another murder - and she finds herself desperately trying to untangle a web of illicit love and betrayal. Soon, Dervla must face her greatest fear... or suffer the same deadly fate as her stepmother.

"If you like mystery fiction with a psychological flair, Vicki Tyley will deliver. She understands that fiction is about real people, and that real people have their dangerous flaws." -Scott Nicholson, Bestselling author of Liquid Fear

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Aussie author Vicki Tyley is a "Superb" Talented mystery/crime writer and I am addicted to her style of mystery/crime novels. 20 de noviembre de 2012

When I saw that the 5th mystery/crime novel "Bitter Nothings by Vicki Tyley was released I was like a little kid at Christmas opening a present. I couldn't wait to buy and download this story and start reading, which of course I did instantly. The cover alone tells a story. This authors prologue got me hooked and sucked me in immediately. JMO but a prologue is vital to me because it either grabs a reader right away or not. If not I will read 4-5 chapters and if it doesn't grab my interest by then or has lots of issues like spelling, formatting problems etc. (I am not talking about a few errors) I won't waste my time reading it because there are thousands of new author e books on my Kindle to go to and I have been lucky to have found some very good new author's.

I could not put Bitter Nothings down until my eyes closed for the night. This story kept my total attention from beginning to the very last word in the epilogue. Ms. Tyley includes Aussie spelled words/slang which I love. I find myself Googling the places that her characters go to in Melbourne (it only takes a few minutes to put yourself right there with the characters) for me it makes me feel like I am watching a movie. I got hooked on Vicki's stories because there is no gore or sexual scenes and I have not been able to guess the correct perpetrator/s in any of her 5 stories. To me that is a challenge for a writer and a reader and I love that. It also shows me the time, effort and talent that Ms. Tyley has to successfully master these tasks.

Ms. Tyley never has any need for "fill in spots" in her stories, every word is important. She writes her story descriptions of characters, places and things with very few words needed because her few words hit the bulls eye every time. There are many twists and turns to keep a reader engrossed with every single character and what they are up to and what is going on.

I highly recommend all 5 of Vicki Tyley's stories, all seem edited and formatted.

Kudos once again for your fifth book Vicki Tyley. Great read!! Waiting for book 6 : >)

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas A well-woven murder mystery. 23 de noviembre de 2012

Vicky Tyley has done it again! This is the fifth book she has written and she always manages to keep me guessing right until the end. That's why I enjoy her books so much.

Bitter Nothings is a well-crafted book. Reading it is like seeing a tapestry woven before your eyes. First all you see are the individual threads and, as you read on, the threads come together to complete the picture, which may not show what you originally expected.

As usual, the story is immaculately written and I love the small details that Vicki slots in effortlessly that add colour and depth. In this book she manages to highlight the tension between the family members in such a realistic manner that I wanted to give a couple of them a swift kick up the rear at times.

I highly recommend Bitter Nothings just as I have recommended all of Vicki's previous books.

Fatal Liaison
They are all well worth reading.

3.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas If my doorbell rang as much as 18 de abril de 2013

Dervlas' did, I would disconnect the thing. If the doorbell wasn't ringing the phones were. And every time she had a chance to eat, something else would happen. I swear the first 15 chapters, that poor girl didn't eat!!! About half way through I stopped and went back to look at the reviews again. I couldn't figure out what story I was reading and what story the other reviewers were reviewing. I continued, thinking maybe they know something. Yes, it finally happened, towards the end of the book, but what a long journey, the ending was quite good. I will read another book by this author just to see if I connect next time.Kisses.

My thoughts:
The very thought of murdered children almost put me off this book, but I did persevere and I am pleased that I did. This is a very intriguing mystery that has the reader hanging to the very end to discover the culprit in this terrible family murder.
As usual a well crafted story with characters that I found a bit difficult to empathise with. Frankly, Dervla Jones is a bit of a handful and needs an injection of ‘intelligence’!
The one person who seemed to have his hand on the wheel was Detective Senior Sergeant Todd Gleeson.
However, the story unfolds in way that surprises and tricks the reader and is the usual high standard of this accomplished author.

Dervla Johns wakes one morning to find her two brothers, Emmet and Gabe at her door bearing horrific news. After their mother's death a few years ago their father, Warren had remarried a woman called Lucinda and seemed happily settled with their two young children, who Dervla adores. However, her brothers have come to break the bad news to her that her father's wife and children have been found murdered in their beds, her father is missing and a suspect for the murders.

Dervla refuses to believe that her father would murder his family and tries to find out more about his recent life. Her best friend Sophie tries to provide emotional support, but she is having her own problems with her violent ex-husband Martin. Lucinda's ex-husband, Harry offers to help Sophie but how much can she trust him? Over the course of the investigation many secrets are uncovered and several characters may have motives for the murders.

This is a complex, psychological thriller, well written with plenty of suspense and multiple suspects with hidden secrets. The identity of the killer came as a complete surprise to me at the end. I'm definitely going to be reading more of Vicki Tyley's thrillers.
