Eventually,Rena married the cult leader. In her teens or young adulthood she murdered Dr. Rulon Allred at her leader's behest. Rena's a victim. She has been brainwashed.
The book is written from the viewpoint of a child. Did anyone notice how bereft she was because her birthdays were not recognised as she felt they should be? In one year a church member had the nerve to be killed in a tragic car accident and cancel her birthday party, one year she was stood up by a cute boy, and so on.. I think that only a child or a warped adult would view that as a major tragedy. Dear me, the poor thing had to give up on birthdays . . .
Perhaps the author chose to write from such an immature, selfish viewpoint to explain her former state of mind when in the cult. I may not be able to recognize a literary style when I see one.
I come out with the icky feeling she still espouses the view of events as written. She seems to be a very unsympathetic character. She gloats about her acquittal even though she freely admits to lying. She whines about her minor trials and tribulations (Oh dear, TOO MANY boyfriends, what to do?)
If this is how she really feels, then it is impossible to feel any empathy for her. If this is how she really feels, the episode is really distasteful. No lesson learned. No redemption for her. Sad to read. I hope she has changed in the 20 years since the book was published.
Read her cousin Susan Schmidt's book His Favorite Wife or Irene Spencer's Cult Insanity. Both very good books.
of religion to the point of murder. This is a hard to read book in the fact of it being true and not fiction. The
truth is stranger than fiction is so true, especially in this instance. It is hard to understand the minds of men
and women sometimes. This book is a good indication of that.
