Das Buch habe ich gekauft weil es in der ARD Sendung Druckfrisch empfohlen wurde. Ich habe etwas gebraucht um in die Geschichte zu finden. Ein Volk, dass von gestrandeten Häftlingen abstammen und einem riegigem Seeungeheuer huldigen - kann das spannend sein? Sehr! Trotz des anfangs wenig tiefsinnig anmutenden Plots, folgt ein Höhepunkt auf den nächsten und man ist schneller durch das Buch als man denkt.
Einzig das Ende ist sehr kurz gehalten. Da hätten noch einige Seiten mehr kommen können. Dennoch ein Muss für Science Fiction Fans!

Whether the story is short or long - and notwithstanding it invariably features a determined young loner, usually involved in a fruitless affaire de coeur - the fabric of his world-building makes you sit through the formulaic prose, just to discover what wonders he's conjured from the far reaches of the galaxy.

Big Planet, Tschai, the Beyond, or in pre-medieval Lyonesse, the scenery, and the creatures and societies that populate it, are just amazingly fresh, even if the script is a bit predictable.

I read "The Kragen" back in the 60's and loved it. Recently I learned that Jack Vance enlarged the story into this book. WOW! Loved it greatly. And, with it now on Kindle, I can have it with me and read it anytime, anywhere.

There are not many books I would read more than once, fewer that I will read several times. This is one on the Several Times list.

I would like to see a movie made of this story.
