I use the SD-1 primarily for worship music in our church's band and have it going into the front of a clean amp (a Tech 21 Blonde). With this pedal/amp configuration I can dial in thick, warm overdrive, or a more transparent, delicate clean sound with a little bite.
Your pickups will play a huge role in the sound you get from this pedal. The Kiesel Lithium pickups in my Aries produce a thick, raging overdrive that cleans up ok with the guitar's volume knob. This allows me to significantly change my tone depending on my picking attack, as I can get light, pretty singles notes/chords when picking softly, and full on roaring chords during a chorus. A hot humbucker will drive this pedal into full overdrive quickly, even with the gain on low.
Single coils will respond much differently, producing a cleaner, transparent overdrive in the low to mid gain setting. Turning the gain up higher will of course add to the dynamic response of your picking and allow you to clean it up with your volume knob much more so than with humbuckers.
I bought it because the reviews were so high and it was so inexpensive.
But I'm not loving it. I already have a Fulltone OCD and I think the OCD is worth the extra $75 (they go for about $125).
To be fair the SD-1 isn't 'worse' to than the OCD, just different. I don't think it's as versatile as I thought it would be. It definitely adds a mid boost to the eq (not that that's bad) it also seems to drop some of the lows and highs (also not necessarily bad). It's definitely not a transparent or sparkly overdrive. In my opinion it's more of a distortion pedal that sounds less heavy-metal.
I might use this with my telecaster to make it sound fatter. I bought the Boss DS-1 recently and I LOVE that pedal. So maybe I was expecting the SD-1 to blow me away and it just didn't.
The overdrive is smooth and round not too shrill or harsh. The drive goes way beyond what I would need. The price was a nice surprise.
