5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Used as a Thematic Unit! 10 de diciembre de 1999

I loved this book so much that I developed a Thematic Unit around it. The book has some of the most outstanding pictures one has ever seen. Through these pictures we get to see Japan's culture, customs, and landscape. The story is great too. Through this book I taught Reading, English, Math, Social Studies, Science, Art, and used the internet to go on a field trip. This is a wonderful book and keeps the reader guessing. Enjoy!

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas GREAT FOLK TALE AND FUNNY TOO!!!! 26 de septiembre de 1998

This is a very classic story from Nagoya region, I believe. Taro was as lazy as he can be. He wants to do nothing but laying on the tatami-mats and sleeping where he received his nickname, Three-Year Nap Taro. Pictures and story are full of Japanese culture and your children would like the twisted ending to learn being lazy is NOT good.

My son's third grade class has been studying Japan. They had a "Japan Day" with lots of Japanese activities. His teacher asked me to read this book to the class. I hadn't read it before and only one child had heard it. They loved it. I have come right home and am purchasing the book for our "library" right now. Highly recommended!

Dianne Snyder's picture book, The Boy of the Three-Year Nap is one of my favorite books growing up as well as it is one that I will definitely use in my classroom someday! It is the perfect story for anyone that thinks they can get by without doing an ounce of work. This book is about a boy named Taro that lives with his mother and is so lazy that he is rumored to be able to sleep for three years at a time if nobody wakes him up. His mother on the other hand, is a very hard working widow that sews kimonos for the rich women in town. One day, a very rich merchant and his family move in next door and Taro cannot help but be envious of the merchant's lifestyle. This book is excellent at subtly making children become aware of how there are class differences and social statuses in the world. This book would also be great for introducing multicultural perspectives as it offers many Japanese elements and themes that could bring new insight to a reader that has never had exposure to the Japanese culture before. Throughout the book, Taro thinks of a plan to become rich and marry the merchant's daughter so that he won't have to work. Although his plan is clever, his mother has an even better plan up her sleeve providing the lesson to readers that in order to be truly successful one must have a combination of both work ethic and brain power together as a package. This suspenseful story will have children at the edge of their seats eager to turn every page and find out what happens next!

Un comentario de un niño - Publicado en

The Boy of the Three Year Nap is a book with tips for reality, mischeviousness, and humor. I believe this book is a humorous book but it doesn't have very good life lessons. When I read this story I vaguely got the impression that life always goes your way. But I know it does not. The boy who was lazy ended up marrying a nice, rich girl because of a lie he started. He never worked hard or anything. I think young children might get the wrong idea about life and honesty. So I would wouldn't recommend for young children to read this book because they might be in for a big dissappointment.
