A Civil War story of danger, intrigue, and romance

The Civil War brought them together and it would tear them apart! Beautiful Kitty Claiborne, the pampered daughter of a wealthy senator, fell deeply in love with Lt. William Benson, attaché to President Lincoln. However, she had no idea her life would change so dramatically after they were married. Could her love endure the hardships of life in a remote cabin when, during the war, Will was given an assignment in East Tennessee? And why didn’t her husband tell her his mission when he left her alone for weeks at a time? Was he one of the mysterious Phantom Warriors everyone was talking about? When he was carried home, badly wounded, by a group of strangers, would she be able to smuggle them all through enemy checkpoints to safety? And why did she bury her husband’s breastplate, from his uniform, deep in the soil on their little farm? The Breastplate is the story of the lives and families torn apart by the Civil War, and the courage of one woman as she struggles to keep her love and family intact during such turbulent times.

THE BREASTPLATE by Shirley McCracken is a novel of the pre-Civil War days that actually begins in the present day Tennessee and via flashback picks up in the Gold Rush Days of the late 1840s and continues until the end of the Civil War. This book is actually two divergent tales: the first half tells of the life of John Henry Claiborne who, in true Bildungsroman fashion we meet as a lad alone in the world. McCracken describes him as the noble type that we like to think represented our pioneer ancestors. He starts out with nothing and like Horation Alger, winds up with a great deal of something. Claiborne meets and falls in love with Kathleen also an apotheosis of glorious American womanhood. Yet, both John and Kathleen are far more than mere stereotypes. Each is tested in the brutal way that America did to those who were not satisfied with the economic and social status quo. In them, their success becomes vicariously our success too. They marry and have a daughter Kitty, and it is Kitty who becomes the dramatic focus of the second half of THE BREASTPLATE.

When an author uses an object as the book title, one can assume that in the course of the novel it accrues a totemic significance. The breastplate on a physical level is a decoration, one that signifies family honor and pride, but on a deeper metaphysical level acts as the thematic bridge between the Tennessee of the Civil War years and the Tennessee of today. It is almost as if it links the geneology of temporarily far distant families. There is a sense that this heirloom is a symbol that despite the passing of many decades, people are people and only their environments differ. The action that swirls around John, Kathleen, Kitty and the breastplate is a miniaturized version of American History 101. We read of real life people and events that ring true to those with even a smattering of knowledge of history. McCracken portrays a landscape that we well know of from other and similar books and movies. In more than one scene, I was reminded of vignettes from GONE WITH THE WIND both book and film. Finally, the majority of the characters acted in a manner that has relevance for today. Hard work, discipline, and basic street smarts are traits that will not go out of style. What emerges from a considered reading of THE BREASTPLATE is the rare opportunity to spend a few hours of delightful reading even as we pick up some sorely needed perspective about who we are and where we came from.

Title: The Breastplate - A Civil War Adventure
Author: Shirley McCracken
Publisher: Outskirts Press, Inc.
ISBN: 978-1-4327-8569-7

"Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him" is from Psalms 37:7. In Shirley McCracken's novel, The Breastplate - A Civil War Adventure, this Biblical statement is considered during the raging American Civil War by a heroine named Kitty Benson who has to wait patiently during wartime.

This two hundred and sixty three page paperback book has a photograph of a gold breastplate or round shape coin-looking item that has an American eagle embellished on it. With no profanity but few references to sex, rape, beatings, death and war, it would be targeted to pre-teen and above age. Although the author states "the events and characters described herein are imaginary and are not intended to refer to specific places or living persons," the story is very liberal relating direct connections to being close friends and assisting with war decisions of President Abraham Lincoln. There are some punctuation errors and overuse of the exclamation point.

This historical fiction covers almost three generations involving Kitty Claiborne Benson, an only child of parents John and Kathleen. Having profited greatly from the Gold Rush, loner John settles in Saint Louis and reconnects with the woman of his dreams, Kathleen, who had fled from her employer who had ulterior sexual motives. After they marry, have a coddled daughter named Kitty, and John becomes Senator, the family moves closer to the White House, befriending President Lincoln. During the Civil War, they turn their home into a hospital and take in the wounded on both sides of the war and help Lincoln solve political problems. Now a young woman, Kitty marries Lincoln's attaché Will Benson, who, unknown to everyone, is sent back to Tennessee as a Union spy in the South, causing havoc and disruption on the Confederate Army with his rogue band of soldiers named the "Phantom Warriors." The ever-perfect and always-getting-her-way Kitty singularly takes care of homestead, animals and wayward or injured men while her husband is gone for months at a time. When Will is injured near the end of the war, she nurtures him back to health and they head for Texas to start new lives.

Besides having a plethora of characters and predictable scenarios, it is an intricate read because the heroine and her parents never make any mistakes and effortlessly solve every issue involving themselves and others. With all the mayhem and war around Kitty, she simplistically steps up and takes charge, even of those around her, accomplishing everything perfectly. However, one never knows what happens to her mother's employer who becomes impoverished and seeks revenge when Kitty inherits his wife's fortunes or why the breastplate that protected Will was buried in Tennessee and not taken to Texas.

This book may be enjoyed by the naïve, young teen who wants to know about the Civil War and adventure but would need to be informed this is truly fiction, not fact, in regard to the relationships with Lincoln and the supposed Phantom Warriors.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas A Wonderful Historical Romance 11 de octubre de 2012

I thought this was a wonderful love story of the times of the Civil War. The author has clearly done a lot of research to make the book seem realistic. Honestly when I read the title of the book and a brief description, I was not sure I would like the book, but I thought it was fabulous. Kitty, one of the main characters, has a lot of spunk for a woman, but with the times and environment she lived in, it was necessary to her survival. I like how the author introduces the novel by connecting it to modern times. I wonder how many of us are aware of our ancestors' stories and how they brought us to where we are today. If you like historical romance stories then you are sure to love this one, as it is packed with information from the Civil War and the adventures of one family that was simply trying to make a difference. It is so much more that just a simple romance, which adds to its appeal. I would be interested in reading sequels to this story. Be sure to add it to your list of books to read.

The Breastplate by Shirley Mccraken was a Civil War adventure. It begins in the present day and goes back in flash backs. The story starts off with Kathleen and John's separate lives and how they meet through their struggles and fall in love. It then leads on to Kitty, their daughter's story. Kitty falls in love with Will Benson who is President Lincoln's right hand man. All this happens during difficult times of war with unrest between the states. Kitty and her family help the wounded soldiers by making a hospital out of their home. The characters came off as being too good who never made any mistakes. It made it seem a bit unreal for me. Other than that the book was okay. There were a lot of supporting characters as well. Maybe the book did not hold that much appeal over me but if you're interested in reading about the Civil War then Breastplate is the book for you.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas The Breastplate: A Civil War Drama is a well written, refreshing love story wrapped in authentic, factual Civil War drama. 8 de octubre de 2014

I am an avid reader and usually have 2, or even three, books going at a time. When I began reading The Breastplate: A Civil War Adventure, however, I could not put it down. I set all other books aside. And I could hardly wait to get back to it. Shirley McCracken's characters came alive and I began to care about them. Ms. McCracken wove the lives and times together so seamlessly, I felt as though I WAS part of their lives; an unseen observer in non-fiction based drama. I even imagined I could procure Kitty's biscuits receipe! I highly recommend The Breastplate: A Civil War Drama. It's a well written, refreshing love story wrapped in authentic, factual Civil War drama.
