Mavis is a marrying Sir Roland freely. Despite his family's reputation of being brutes, she discovers a gentler man, one who is kind to people and animals. Mavis also shares these qualities but she is more vocal and she wants a marriage that will one day grow into a loving relationship.
Sir Roland has inherited lands and the title after his father and older brother died, who were angry violent men. Sir Roland has a twin brother who believes that Roland was not the firstborn and there is thick tension between them. He has suffered from ridicule from his family including his twin brother for years. He has been told he cannot attract a woman because he lacks charm and is too quiet and unfortunately Roland has believed it. Therefore he is amazed that lovely Mavis would willingly marry him.
The tension in this story comes from Roland and Mavis's uncertainty in their relationship. Roland is analytical and cannot fathom some of Mavis's actions. She defends him and is passionate and loving. Mavis wonders how loyal Roland is to her. Also Roland's twin comes between the two of them frequently. Roland feels a strong bond with him and Mavis finds him untrustworthy and bitter.
It was easy to like these leads. They both exhibit admirable qualities of loyalty and compassion. Mavis is no weakling but she is also not a hot headed stubborn heroine either. Roland is the more interesting character, he has had to endure much; it had made him both harder and softer. There's plenty of action in this novel too with some surprises thrown in to make this story a little unpredictable. Very good.
The blurb for this book doesn't really paint an entirely accurate overview of this book. Mavis and Roland are both insecure and suffer from low self esteem. Together they could have the love of a lifetime - but they both let their insecurities get in the way.
I hope the next book in the series features Gerrard. He was quite the character in this book and I would love to see him get a HEA
While I didn't like this book as much as the first book - it was still a good read and I would recommend it.
