4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Works very well on a mixed network 2 de octubre de 2009

I gave 4 stars instead of 5 for the following reasons:
1) Scanning from the ADF is slower than I expected once you get past the first page.
2) The printer memory can be easily upgraded with up to 512 MB. However, the memory module is a 144-pin PC100/133 SO-DIMM. This is very out of date memory. You would think that out of date memory would be dirt cheap but it is not. Compare prices and you will find that it costs about as much as 4 GB of the very latest memory because very few manufacturers still produce it and very few retailers stock it. Even if that memory is more than adequate for the printer's needs, Brother should still use something more modern to keep the costs down.

--------------------
I have a network with machines running Windows Vista, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and Ubuntu 9.04 Linux. This printer worked with all three operating systems with no tweaking at all. In fact, the only headache was that the Windows software provided by Brother required a reboot after installing (I thought we left Windows 95 far behind...). The Mac immediately recognized the printer via Rendezvous and was ready to print within seconds. What surprised me the most, however, was that Linux saw the printer and configured itself right away. Brother offers Linux drivers, but there is no point in even downloading the print drivers as CUPS handles it out of the box. For scanning, you should install the Brother "driver" which is actually just a very tiny daemon that the printer contacts when you press the scanning button. All the daemon does is kick off the appropriate shell script, which are located in /etc/local/Brother/sane. It is all very configurable and if you know your scripting, this printer is MORE capable on Linux than it is on Mac or Windows!

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Great for Mac Users with Snow Leopard 15 de febrero de 2010

Setup. For Mac users running Snow Leopard, setup of this printer couldn't be any easier. Specific drivers for the 8480DN are included in current versions of Snow Leopard. All we had to do was plug the printer into our ethernet+wireless network, and all of our networked Macs (wired and wireless) were able to detect and access it immediately, with full functionality. We never even had to touch the Brother software CD.

Network scanning. Mac Snow Leopard users will NOT need to install the Brother software to do network scanning. To perform network scanning in Snow Leopard, open Image Capture (a standard included application) from a Mac on the network. The 8480DN should automatically be detected and appear in the "devices" list as a network scanner. (We have our printer connected only to our network, not USB.) Just select the 8480DN icon from the list, and then you will be able to operate the scanner from within Image Capture, with the ability to remotely select document feeder or flatbed, change color/resolution options, scan to pdf/jpg/tiff, and scan to email. (Note: I believe, although I'm not certain, that Snow Leopard is required for network scanning. I say this because we were not able to get this to work on our MacBook running old Leopard.)

Single-sided print speed is very fast; duplex print speed is a little slower but still acceptable. Copy and scan speeds are good. We rarely use the fax capability of this device, so no opinion there. We are very satisfied with this product.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Amazing Printer - Incredible Price 3 de abril de 2012

When it came time to retire my 12-year old HP3200, (which has been also been an amazing printer with > 150k pages in its lifetime), I checked out all of the SOHO laser printers on the market. I was looking for the usual all-in-one capabilties, and really wanted a duplexer and integrated LAN interface. I was also hoping for a reasonble software package that would enable all of the notebooks, desktops, servers, tablets, phones, etc in the office to send output to the printer and recieve faxes.

When the package arrived, I noted the solidness of the box and how well packed it was so that I would not have to face the shipping return desk. After unpacking the printer, I was surprised with the weight of the chassis, whcih rivaled some of the big office workhorse printers costing thousands of $$$, as compared to the lightweight plastic versions that some companies pass off.

Software installation was a little tricky because I have a tricky home network with several firewalls, but I suspect your average person with a single LAN could set it up in a few minutes. After I got it all setup and sent a few pages the printer, I was staggered a the speed the pages appeared. For those of you who are used to ~10 ppm from your old laser printer, this one is a serious performer. I sent a 250 manuscript through it, duplexed (printed on both sides), and went to make a sandwitch. It was done printing before I had the mayo on the bread!

A feature I just love is the scan to PC, where you insert a stack of paper in the document feeder, choose scan to PC, select the PIN of the PC to scan to, and it just works! I wish I could say the same about other software and peripherals I own. If they all worked this well, the PC tech's could take the day off.

Summing it all up ... Great printer, great printer software, very reasonable priced supplies, and Amazing Amazon service. What more could I ask for?

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas A multifunction that pleases 9 de abril de 2011

With the multifunction printer/scanner/fax/copier in place for several months and are very pleased with it in just about every way. This monochrome duplexing printing unit take care of 2 sided output nicely and automatically. The print quality is excellent on they type of typical office output being printed.

The network scanner performs well in both grey scale and color. The automatic feeder has not misfed on us yet - which is unusual here. The ability to trigger a scan to PC is simple and intuitive. The driver installation sets up and registers the PC with the multifunction, so that PC is in the scanner send-to menu. Nice!

The FAX function is on a dedicated line. The use is intuitive, automatic, and works really well. Since setting up the FAX it just works - what we would like to see and we have not particularlt thought of it since setting it up.

The copier is like the FAX but without the setup. It simply works well and reasonably quickly, especially if multiple copies of an original set of documents is needed.

This Brother 8480DN replaced a little bit older HP. One of the things that is REALLY nice is how the only software installed with the setup is related to the printer directly. This is very different from the previous HP unit, only a few years old. That HP B&W laser multifunction took the better part of an hour to do the default installation. The HP installed lots junkware with a bloated installation process. Once we removed the HP software, which took as long as the install, it was like getting a new PC; they noticibly sped up. I don't know what the HP software was doing to make the PC slow when not printing, but the change was quite noticable. Changing to the Brother was worth it just for the productivity increase from better PC performnace.
5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Awesome Small Business Printer! 7 de mayo de 2014
Por J. Lua - Publicado en Amazon.com

My family has a small business and we do a lot of printing and always relied on brother printers to do the job, we’ve owned brother since the earlier 5040 models and never had any issues and this printer was no exception. It has seen a lot of use since I purchased it in 2009 and is still going strong. Performance is excellent, it prints fast, and toner cartridges give us consistent high yields. Another reviewer mentioned the price of toner as a concern, but we tend to use Cartridge world to offset the cost and we still see great yields.

Pros:
- It is fast!
- Network capability. Great for small businesses and easy to set up.
- Good fax capabilities for those rare occasions you need to fax something.
- Scan to PDF is a great feature.
- Doesn't jam.
- Easily adjust tray from letter to legal.
- 2 sided printing
- No issues running on XP - Win 7

Cons:
- We print lots of envelopes. This printer like most of this kind tends to curve the envelopes.
- After 5 long years of use some of the mechanical components (Mainly wheels) that move the paper through the printer make a low screeching noise. Not a big deal. I’ve been to lazy to take it apart and clean to see what is causing it. might need some lubrication.
