Seth is an 18-year-old who serves as the scapegoat for almost everyone at his high school. When his alcoholic parents aren’t neglecting him, they’re abusing him. But all that begins to change when an eccentric family friend gives him a bone amulet. The amulet isn’t decorative – it has the power to manifest Seth’s wishes, making it a powerful defensive (and offensive) weapon.

Smith writes clear and simple prose and the story glides smoothly along, carrying the reader through some of the more fantastical elements. It’s hard to judge the book because this is just the introduction. The story ends abruptly just as things are getting interesting. Given more of a foundation, the air of unreality that pervades the book may settle down, but I was never able to fully suspend my disbelief or connect with the array of characters who are mostly presented in starkly “good and evil” terms. Seth is dreadfully abused by everyone in his life, yet he often seems like the most level-headed and reasonable person in the room. That he picked up these characteristics without having anyone in his life ever model them defies belief.

I understand author's will try and reel readers in by ofering cheap or free books in a hope we will then purchase follow up books. In this case I do feel slightly annoyed as a) this in effect is more of a preview as opposed to a book (trust me - it is short) and b) it is not a stand alone book with the cliffhanger ending leaving me feeling very frustrated.

There are three further books in the series, each quite short I believe, and each $2.99. Leads to me having to pay $9 for a complete story. I have decided not to do so.

With regards this particular intro (I refuse to call it a book) it has great potential. A main character who has an opportunity to avenge the bullying he has been receivng for years, but is trying to maintain a sense of proportion as well as 'baddies' who you are willing to pay for their actions. The writing is okay, but does appear rushed. In the space of a few pages you experience a few events which could have been described more comprensively. I find this ironic, as I have read plenty of books that were just drawn out short stories. This is a reverse of those and could easily have been doubled in length to give both the story and characters justice.

Recommended?

Yes if you understand you will be expected to purchase follow up chapters in order to get the whole story. It is not even a stand alone book, but as already stated, is more of a teaser or sample of what is yet to come.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas A magic solution to bullying 25 de noviembre de 2012

This first novella of a series of 4 introduces us to Seth, who is nearly 18 years old living with drunken parents in a trailer park, with no self respect or confidence because he has been emotionally and physically bullied all of his school life. When he starts his last year at school an old man at the park gives him an amulet necklace containing a piece of human bone and tells him that, used properly, the magic powers of amulet will help him to counter bullying and create a better life. The old man warns Seth to be careful as the powers of the amulet could cause harm to others as well as to himself.

Seth's first day of school is dramatic as he explores how to use the power of the amulet to counter both bullying students of both sexes and the disinterest of his teachers. For the first time Seth finds some self confidence and as a result makes a couple of friends, Alex and Jennifer, who look set to support and follow him. The novella ends dramatically in a way that opens the way for vengeance down the track.

Most of us will have experienced some kind of emotional or physical bullying during our school days and will identify in some way to the extreme bullying and the bullies that Seth faces. With the power of the amulet as a great plot opener Christopher Smith introduces us to the roller coaster ride that converts a downtrodden youth into a powerful and vengeful person. While I am not a fantasy person the idea is an interesting one and I will go along with the ride, at least for the next novella. The latter 2 novellas appear to tend to the supernatural and I will pass judgement when I get there.

I started reading this story last night and finished it this afternoon. Amazing! Seth Moore is a senior in high-school hell, as he calls it. He's been harassed, bullied, kicked, spit at, all of his life in this small community. Even his teachers are non-supportive, and the worst part ... he has no friends. Both his parents are alcoholics, unemployed, impoverished, living in a trailer. Seth is returning to school in September for his last year of school. After which he plans to take his diploma and run far away from the horrid, sad life he leads. On the first day heading to school on the morning school bus, he is harassed, but a new student to town stands up and defends him. Alex is tall, muscled, and while living in Manhattan helped his brother who was always bullied. He's a good kid and will be Seth's friend. Before long, Seth is determined to speak up for himself, he's not going to take bullying any longer. This story is superbly written, the pace moves right along, the story is captivating and engaging. There's quite a twist at the end, thus I hurriedly downloaded the second book of the series, "Revenge" and third book, "Witch." I sure do highly recommend this for teens and also adults.

I will warn you, once you start reading this you will not be able to put it down. And that's fine, it's a short read and since it's so gripping you don't even notice how fast you are turning the pages to see what happens next. I really feel for Seth, being bullied but everybody will get what they deserve when he gets his hands on an amulet to help him exact some revenge.

I think this book is excellent for anybody, it's a nice dark thriller that deals with a very common problem these days. Read it and if you like it like I did, you'll have the get the other 3 in the series right away.

My only complaint, I'd like the 4 stories printed in one book so I have a copy for my shelf and right now it's only Kindle.
