Reseña del editor
This landmark book chronicles the development of a kind of photography that is created out of the energy and chance juxtapositions found in everyday life on the street. Street photography is at the heart of what makes photography unique. An unprecedented study that is the first history of this tradition ever published, Bystander explores street photography through a discussion of the medium's masters - Atget, Stieglitz, Strand, Cartier-Bresson, Brassai, Kertesz, Evans, Levitt, Frank, Arbus, Winogrand, and many others - and reveals along the way much about the craft and creative process of photography. Profusely illustrated with the work of more than eighty photographers, the book is composed of four parts separated by lively folios of pictures. Each part discusses a different era - from the early days of the medium in nineteenth-century Europe, to America in the late twentieth century - and devotes entire chapters to the key figures of that period.

Previous reviewers mention the layout of the photos, and I agree that it does seem random, often leaving vast areas of unused page space, and then multiple photos jammed into the same area. At first I thought this was to avoid double page speads, which I hate because I feel the seam can ruin the overall composition, but no, there are several of these double page photos. The layout aside, I am able to compare many of these images to the same photo as they appear in my other books, famous photos by the stars of the genre, and there is something missing in the reproductions in this book. There is a thinness, a lack of contrast in many of these photos. I can see the difference like night and day when viewing the same photo in other books side by side. This is not terrible, but the art is not represented at its best potential, which could be misleading to those who are just exploring this photography for the first time via this book.
As for the narratives, I loved reading the reminiscing on Gary Winnogrand, and his process. There are some great explanations about the thought processes of the act of street shooting through out many decades. These add to the value of the photos.
Trying to follow Meyerowitz's & Westerbeck's conversation, both obviously deeply emotional about the subject of street photography, simply went over my head in a rush of technical details & passionate positing as to why which photographer did what.
It is, however, the photographs in BYSTANDER that draw you back, again & again. The earliest ones that beg to have been enlarged, so rich in texture & composition; the later ones with their implicit social commentaries.
When we say that a picture is worth a thousand words, we're not kidding! Each & every photograph, even those that I couldn't make head nor tail, tell stories of our predecessors' lives & times, letting social history unravel before our eyes.
BYSTANDER is for everyone who loves to look at the past - the everyday, angular, shadow & light city past, through the window of a camera.
