I have an eclectic stereo system, comprised of "vintage" and modern audio components. Among these are two DVD machines, one of which is also a recorder, and I have always used the DVD devices as players for my CDs, as well. That has worked OK, but I felt that from a sonic quality viewpoint, I was probably missing something. Since my DVD machines are not high end units, I suspect that the audio decoding might be of the "one bit" type. (Note that a digital-to-analog converter ("DAC") is required for each audio channel to convert the bit stream from the disc into an analog signal you can hear.) I have been amazed when manufacturers actually tout their use of "one bit converters"! In fact, a "pro" grade rack-mount CD player, intended for DJ and other professional applications, that I recntly purchased for a church system, surprised me by stating in the owner's manual that it had a pair of 1-bit DACs. (That machine cost nearly as much as the CD30.) The use of 1-bit DACs implies possibly lots of analog filtering to deliver a decent audio signal.

I went looking for a CD-only player that had more than a one-bit converter. The CD30 is that machine, having at its heart the Wolfson 24 bit DACs. What an improvement! I have listened to several of my CDs on it, and I find it incredible as to the sonic differences in having such devices, along with the necessary high quality follow-on electronics between them and the Line Output connectors on the back panel. Of course, it also helps if the rest of the machine is of a quality to compliment the DACs, and Cambridge Audio delivers on that score, as well. The overall quality appears to be excellent, even though this machine is made in China. (I had expected it to be made elsewhere, but Cambridge must have a rigorous QC system in place.) I have not taken the case off to examine the innards, but in terms of mechanical operation and audio delivery, everything looks, sounds, and works well.

The only nit I have with Cambridge Audio is that the manual does not come out and state a warranty period for the machine. It seems that warranty duration varies by country. Although they did manage to supply the CD30 with a power cord and plug that works for US power outlets, they could not bother to include a statement as to warranty duration. I found that surprising, given the otherwise high quality of the unit and attention to detail in its design and packaging.

In summary, I'm delighted with the performance of the CD30. The clarity of the highs, the solid feel to the low end, and the overall sonic character of the delivered audio is well above those one-bit wonders. In fact, the high end is improved to the point that I actually had to reduce my treble settings so that the higher frequency music sounds were not over-stated or harsh sounding. I am a very happy camper with the CD30.

I was looking for a small foot print, quality CD transport to hook up to my Woo Audio, tube, headphone amp on my night stand. This is an excellent choice ! The size is great. Build quality is very good. The player looks confident. The sound is very accurate and revealing. My ultimate choice was based on its quality Wolson DAC. The price is perfect. I am very pleased with this purchase and am glad to have gotten it through Amazon. Most of my purchases are through Amazon now. Their selection, price, and service are hard to beat at the moment. Thanks, Amazon !!
