5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Fast, lightweight purification and storage all in one 20 de julio de 2012

I bought this for an Appalachian Trail section hike. I previously had carried a Steri-Pen, which is a great product, but decided to try this out because it allows you to purify and store the water, thereby reducing the number of tools I needed to carry. Bottom line, it works great and I highly recommend it.

The unit comes with a fitted neoprene-type case for the purifier unit (the zipper pull on the case broke off almost immediately) and a flat cap for the bottle for storage. In slow flowing, shallow streams or spring outlets, I used a cup to scoop water, pre-filtered it through a Steri-Pen funnel pre-filter (mine is green silicone type material, I bought it on Amazon a couple years ago) to get rid of the particulates, and then ran the sterilization cycle once or twice depending on how much I thought it needed (the instructions say you only need to run the cycle once unless the water is really, really dirty).

I used this product to treat and refill several liters of water over about 1 week with barely a dent in the battery charge. I would guesstimate you could go for ~2 weeks with moderate use (3-4 cycles / day) on one charge.

The only thing I don't like is that the bottle is only 750ml - I think it would be better to have it be a standard liter so that I could treat and store a reserve liter of water for when my Camelbak bladder runs dry. However, I understand from another reviewer that the threads on the purifier head fit certain of the Camelbak 1 liter bottles, so there seems to be a workaround.

This is now my go-to water treatment tool. I will probably still carry my Steri-Pen as a backup on long trips since it is lightweight and works great, but if you are going to pick one UV treatment tool, I recommend this one.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Great design- easy to carry- trip to India 17 de enero de 2013

I bought this for a trip to India and am so glad I did. bottled water here is plentiful- but the quality of it is questionable. Have been filtering my water since i got here and haven't had any "delhi-belly" or other issues yet.

The blue color is really neat- looks like it is glowing- very stylish. I also brought a backpack here and this is great because the cap has a little 'loop' handle and i can weave my backpack straps through it so it can't fall out of the side-pocket.

**Added benefit- the UV filtering cap fits on a number of other jugs- nalgene and a few other brands that I tried. So you can bring a few and inter-change them with the UV technology.

**comes with second cap that is non-UV so that you can sanitize and then have a more portable jug to carry after if you swap the caps.

the uv filter comes with a cord and a nice little pouch to carry it too.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas I noted at my favorite co-op that UV seems to be the in thing ... 11 de enero de 2015

I confess at to a "brand loyalty" to Camelbak. I don't know why. I guess it's because I have so many of the products.

My spouse and I were going to Peru. My several years experience in the "Third World" has scarred my gastrointestinal system. I noted at my favorite coop that UV seems to be the in thing to eliminate that by which I've been "scarred." But at that co-op, it was pretty expensive. So I looked here in amazon, and found that I could save.

to be perfectly honest, I don't know if it was the UV, my "prepared" system, or any other combination that made my system "safe." But I didn't get sick after nearly three weeks in Peru. So, it seems to have worked.

AND it give me still another Camelbak bottle to carry when I'm travelling.

I may study and see that the UV thing is a fad. Camelbak claims that 99.99 percent of bacteria and viruses are eliminated by this item. Again, something seems to have worked.

Oh, and it's easily rechargeable. Suffice it to say I won't need another one as long as I live. And, again, I saved about 30 percent on what I would have paid at the coop.

I do recommend extra care in drinking while travelling. And this is certainly less expensive than to purchase bottled water everywhere you go. For me, again, it worked.

By the way, I was going to separately review the little "pre-filter" which I'd purchased separately. I don't recommend that little blue thing unless you're going to, say, filter water out of a stream, something that might have "macroscopic" impurities in it. If you'll be using water from a faucet, you won't need that paper filter, just the UV to kill whatever microorganisms that are still in the water.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas A "must have" for camping in Hawaii and other tropical and third world destinations... 25 de junio de 2014

Here in Hawaii, many streams are contaminated by leptospirosis bacteria, which are too small for most backpacking filters, and I suspect that most tropical and third world areas are hosts to a wide variety of microorganisms and viruses that cannot be removed by such filters. (Incidentally, leptospirosis bacteria, viruses and other organisms can often infect through skin cuts and abrasions, or through mucus membranes--something for hikers to be aware of. In addition, leptospirosis sickens and even kills people every year, worldwide, not just in Hawaii...) The most effective treatment in such areas is boiling, a full course of chemical treatment, or use of ultraviolet light to deactivate biological pathogens. Of the last, the Camelbak All Clear ultraviolet has the best reputation for durability, especially compared to the SteriPens, and the included USB chargeable battery has the longest working life and charge retention cycle. The ultraviolet lamp is well protected deep up inside the cap, behind a crystal lens, rather than exposed the way it is on the SteriPens. The only drawback, IMO, is the fact that it is designed to treat only 750 ml at a time instead of the standard one liter capacity that you find in most backpackering water bottles. BTW, the threading is the "standard" 63mm threading used by manufacturers like Camelbak, Nalgene, and MSR, for their widemouth water carriers.

3/30/15 Update: While I haven't used or charged this UV lamp for at least a half year, it is still holding a full charge in the rechargeable battery. Now THAT is an impressive "shelf time," IMO...
5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Excellent product so far 8 de agosto de 2016

Excellent product so far. I took it to colorado and it worked amazing. Quick and easy to use. Just fill, press the button for a few seconds agitate for 60secs while the timer counts down and you are ready to drink. I suggest bringing an alternative filtering system just incase the batteries fail. We purified multiple bottles on one charge. the price is high ($100) but when you realize that if it you use it 10,000 times as it is advertised that you can you are only paying .01 (1 penny) per purified water. When purifying at night the illumination the UV light makes is beautiful and can function as a flashlight for 60 sec. Of note: I was using this at 10,000 to 14,000 feet to purify streams. When I charged it we were at this level. It charged with no problems, I disconnected the usb cable and replaced the little rubber cap over the usb outlet on the purifier and didn't think anything of it. Returned home to 1100 feet of altitude and was so disappointed that when i unpacked it and was going to assess it and prepare it for storage that it would not work no matter what i did. What I finally realized after opening/removing the small rubber gray cap that covers the usb port was that the significant change in pressure had forced the gray cap in farther and affected the electronics of the device. after relieving the pressure the device functioned excellent once again. The top also held up to my son falling into the stream while using the product and while the device was not submerged for great lengths of time. the product has continued to function properly since then.
