I feel that Peter and James have done a tremendous job of explaining chemical reactions using perspectives that are not used in traditional text books. They explain reactions in terms of bonding theories and orbitals rather than solely using kinetics and equilibrium. The author's use of visual representations throughout the book increases the comprehension of the material covered in the text. I look forward to using this textbook in my organic chemistry courses. By tackling the most central ideas in chemistry, Why Chemical Reactions Happen provides the reader with all the tools and concepts needed to think like a chemist. The text takes a unified approach to the subject, aiming to help the reader develop a real overview of chemical processes, by avoiding the traditional divisions of physical, inorganic and organic chemistry.
To understand how chemical reactions happen we need to know about the bonding in molecules, how molecules interact, what determines whether an interaction is favourable or not, and what the outcome will be. Answering these questions requires an understanding of topics from quantum mechanics, through thermodynamics, to "curly arrows". In this book all of these topics are presented in a coherent and coordinated fashion, showing how each leads to a deeper understanding of chemical reactions.

According to the back cover, this book is appropriate for anyone with a "high school level" of chemistry. Presumably the authors are referring to the British A-Level, but I think the average A-level (or International Baccelauriate in North America) student would find this book heavy slogging indeed. No, if it was to be used by students, I would suggest it's most appropriate for a 2nd to 4th university semester physical organic course. It would also be a very useful and easily read refresher book for upper-year students. As a chemistry prof, I could easily see this as a text for the second half of an introductory (general) chemistry course. But I think the best use for this book would be in a "physical chemistry for the life sciences" type course, for biochemistry or molecular biology majors. It hits on all the important chemical questions (kinetics, thermodynamics, bonding) that a molecular life scientist needs, without bogging itself down in lists of reactions (like standard organic texts are wont to do). It might not have enough mathematical detail to fit in a hard-core physical course, nor enough reactions to satisfy a hard-core organic course.
The book is concise, uses diagrams effectively, and reads quickly for an experienced chemist. The tradeoff is that there is no glossary, and terms are introduced once and the reader is then expected to know it from then on. This can make it very heavy slogging for a high school student! It could possibly be used as a textbook in a low-level chemistry class.
Although I think most students would appreciate the brevity, it's hard to recommend this as a textbook: (1) the cost is quite high for the size, although the length is exactly right for a 1-semester physical organic course; (2) there are no exercises or even concept reviews - it's written as a reference book, or maybe as a "Physical Organic for Dummies", but it's too high a level to appeal to a general audience. Therefore, I would have to classify it as a valuable reference text around which to design a physical organic course. As such, the authors have admirably met their goal.
